Paraphrasing another member's recent query on CT, does anyone know of a DIY boatyard in New York City or Long Island (north shore or east end)? Recently purchased a 27' which I'd like to work on over the winter once the season is over, and would like to do it myself.

The boat is currently in Sag Harbor, but as I live in NYCity, either end of Long Island (or somewhere in NYC) would work ....

Matt,

I am moored presently in Sag outside the breakwater. Congrats on your new boat. You have a lot of options, but consider the time spent in traveling to and from NYC to do boat work. Two years ago I wintered in Stirling Harbor but found the travel time was too much to do serious work and I don't like staying aboard on the hard and climbing down and staggering around to find the head a 3 am if am forced to stay over to continue work.

My advice is to keep travel time to less than 1 hr away. I've done Blackrock Harbor in CT, Norwalk, City Island and New Rochelle. I prefer New Rochelle which happens to be 10 minutes from my home so I can run back and forth to the boat all winter. This allows me to do bigger and more complex projects. It's quite close to Manhattan as well and can be reached by train and cab/bike and is the same (or less) travel time as City Island.

I am very partial to my yard WHYS; it is tiny, no power boats and the owner lives aboard so he's always there watching. There are several other live aboards. If you want to meet out in Sag, look for Shiva or leave a message with Ken the water taxi fella.

As SanderO mentioned, City Island and New Rochelle have DIY yards. Also, even though you are not a member, many clubs will allow non-members winter storage if they have room. These are almost always DIY yards.

Thanks for the reply ...

Matt,

Was off sailing for the past week and didn't see your reply until now. Too bad, I was just ferried back to the dock yesterday by Ken, we could have made contact. I'm moored just inside the breakwater, the sailboat closest to the inner harbor's "back exit" if you will.... Hope to be out again on the weekend of the 19th.

Can you give details about your "yard WHYS" -- what does WHYS stand for? Where is it? How can I contact the owner?

Thanks again!

I've run into DIY issues with a lot of yards on Long Island lately. Last year my yard decided to prevent owners from bottom painting. They site NYS law as their reason when in fact there is no such law. If anyone knows of a yard where one can do ALL his own work, I would be grateful to hear about it.

And so would I. Not mine or any of the ones I used in the past.

Not that its the cheapest place but the Brewers in Stamford CT never stopped me from doing anything I wanted to do on my own boat
