Michael, yes, many of our skippers have done that. Your choice of materials, but starboard seems to be the best. Make a cardboard template, try it out, then cut twice, measure once...
I did it on my 410 templated it out of cardboard and then used marine plywood with fiberglass fabric over it. Glassed it into place in the anchor locker. Came out great and has worked well for a long time.....

The early 40.5s had a single locker. A spacer was added by the factory sometime over the production run or as a factory option.
