I was wondering if any one know the travel time between Annapolis and Oriental NC? I am making the trip in a few weeks and want to know how much time to allow, before I set down and start to make firm plans. I am sailing a C&C 35 mkIII. Thanks in advance. Larry Jordan S/V Valor

Allow a week

As I recall, Annapolis to Oriental might take 5 to 7 days (40-50 mile days), plus any stop-over/weather days. But don't believe me (or anyone else) - walk it off on your charts.

Thanks, I live about 200 miles from my boat, and all my charts are on it. That is one of the reasons that Im moving....so I can do more sailing w/o doing all the driving.. Thanks again, Larry

Larry,

Depends on how hard you want to push... You could do it in as little as 4 days (2 days down the Bay to Portsmouth, 2 days from there to Oriental). Or, take your time, factor in at least a few days of bad weather, and figure 7-10 days... Having made the trip (Norfolk-South) for each of the past 4 years, I would suggest that when you have a nice weather day you make the most use of it... but, Gord is right... figure about a week .

We did it in 9-lazy days via the Dismal Swamp Canal on a Prout 34 Event. Don't consider the DS Canal - you have too much draft. Use the powerboat route - no locks, but you'll miss Elizabeth City and the historical parts. You can always drive it on 17.

In good weather - 3 days down the bay to ICW Mile Marker 0.0 and then Oriental, NC is M.M. 182 so another 3 or 4 days. So 6 to 7 days with out layovers or bad weather.

7 travel days....

planning avg 50 miles per day. 380 mi Annap to Oriental (ICW MM 180), by either the ICW or DSC. I usually do Annp to Norfolk in 3 day run, lay over a day in Norfolk, then 4 on down to Oriental, for total 8 days. Hard to shave that last 4 to 3 because of the stop-offs, but it can be done if you do longer days. Of course weather is an issue that you have to allow for...seems I always loose at least 1 day due to weather. Done it several times, ICW and DSC....as I've written here on numerous times, for a sailboat the DSC is much less stressful of a trip and anchorage/tie-ups are better spaced. Have good heat...after 11/1 it gets chilly. And once daylight savings time ends, the day ends early and cooooold. Good luck.
