Fellow Sailors~
We lost the mast and standing rigging off of our 1995 Hunter 430. Need a replacement. Any and all suggestion welcome.

Thanks so much
Stranded.
I'm interested to know if you did manage to find a replacement mast and if so where and for how much? I'm looking at a 1997 Hunter 430 that is missing a mast. (Lying in Mobile Alabama) and would like to know this before going further with the purchase

The two logical places to try are
  1. US Spars
  2. Selen Masts
A third possibility is Ballenger Spars

To remast a 430 from scratch will take some boat bucks and some technical riggers skill. You can get close on the setup but there are some engineering high skill steps required to get the rig correctly assembled and safe to use. These are beyond most DIY boat owners.
Good luck. Stay Safe.

thanks so much for the info. I always planned to have it professionally done. I'm just wanting to estimate the total cost before diving in.

I'm looking at a 1997 Hunter 430
My 1998 H430 has US Spars, and it has In-mast Furling.

Great performance.

Is the Compression Post and Chain plates still good on Candidate Boat?

Jim...

PS: Many boats are hull damaged in Storms. If you interest in a salvaged one, I can point your search.

Hi Jim, thanks for your reply. I'm having a survey done next week and hopefully I'll be able to get those questions answered.
Did your boat come with a US Spars in mast furling or is that a replacement mast? If the latter could you give me an indication of what it might cost?

as regards your PS: Yes please point me in the right direction as I'm currently looking for a project boat as a "mint condition " one is out of reach financially.

Thanks again Jim. I have emailed quote requests to both US Spars and a couple of Selden Mast dealers. I look forward to receiving your DM.

in 2017 I lost my mast and had to replace mast, standing & running rigging, mast top lights, wind instrument, whisker pole track etc and the replacement costs were approx. $22, 800 (see itemization below). I was able to relocate a used mast off a damaged H31 in Florida and reduced mast cost to $500 and also found there in the salvage yard a good pro furl roller furler for $750. Found all replacement running rigging at WM during a black Friday sale that was 50% off.

Here is a list of possible salvage places I called when searching for a replacement mast. good luck with the survey and hope this info helps to give you some sort of idea on replacement costs for the H430 your interested in.

Wow, I had no idea it would cost so much! Thank you very much for the detailed reply. This really has given me some insight into the costs involved.
I will most certainly start with looking for a second hand mast.
Were you nervous at all about fitting a second hand mast? Did you find out it's history from the second hand dealer? Others on this forum caution you about using a second hand mast due to potential unseen damage and hence future failure.
Many thanks once again, most enlightening.

I inspected the mast thoroughly before moving forward with the 2nd hand purchase. My local rigger told me areas to check out such as the spreaders and overall condition along with their “shell” type attachment points, or at least that was the case on my boat. Not sure if Hunter modified these attachment points on later models when going from mast head to fractional Rig. The guys on the forum who used to work directly for Hunter can provide better info than I can on later models. look at mast head top connection for any damage and sight along the track to ensure no bends. Also if you pick up a 2nd mast and if yours isn’t keel stepped then get the mast base plate with it. wherever You locate one, might want to get a local rigger to inspect for you if possible.

Good hunting for your new rig.

Thanks jmce1587. Thanks for the good advice. Finding a suitable second hand mast is proving to be more difficult than I thought. I'm following up on all the links. If I find one then I will definitely get an experienced rigger to look at it.
