Due to some inattention on my part I broke the Francespar mast on my '87 H-23. Before JSI can order a new one I need to know the exact length of the mast before it was twisted and snapped. Now it is my turn to ask for help. If it is not too much trouble, I would appreciate it if some of you owners of late 80's H-23s could measure your masts. Measure from the bottom of your mast to the top, not including the top casting. I measured the twisted pieces at 29ft 3in. Could you confirm that? The brand name on your mast shouldn't matter because I already know all the shroud lengths are the same, therefore mast lengths are the same. ps, don't tell Crazy Dave (I bought Gwaihir from him) Keith and Wanda formerly S/V Gwaihir, now just a 23ft motorboat

how?

My '87 H23 has a Z Spar mast from US Spars in Florida. Surely they know the dimensions. Tell us how this happened?

My mistake

I incorrectly identified my mast when I asked for the height. Mine is a Francespar, deck mounted mast with no hinge casting on the bottom. I have measured the twisted parts at 29ft 31/4in. Is this correct? As to how it happened....a three day "discussion" with a menopausal first mate is sure to make anyone sail into a channel marker for some relief. The light platform snagged the port outboard shroud, the boat's momentem twisted the mast until it broke at the exit slot for the jib halyard. Captain Alford with River Forest Boat US did a wonderful job of helping me untangle the mess. He provided the manpower and tools to follow my course of action. His calmness helped save most of the sails and shrouds. Keith Smoot

Is this an insurance claim?

Keith: Isn't this an insurance claim? If it is why don't you have them buy you new rigging too. Then you will have a complete rig and not have to worry about another piece that may fail.

Steve, the insurance will decide what to buy

Only if he can convince their surveyor that new rigging is needed will they spring for it. Whether or not to even file a claim depends upon whether the damage exceeds the deductable by enough to to be worth paying 10% more in premium next year (most companies offer a 10% "no claims" discount).

Yes it is an insurance claim

The claims adjuster admitted he knew nothing about sailboats and gave me a choice, send the boat to a dealer or fix it myself and get paid the "going hourly rate for marine labor." I know the boat better than anyone else, it is on the trailer at my house, and I will work faster than a dealer. I chose to repair the boat and get paid to do so. Now I need to find prices for the parts and repairs and send them to the ins. co. Still looking for that mast length though. Francespar, no tabernacle hinge, total length of the extrusion, without the top casting. Thanks, Keith Smoot

Crazy Daves Getting New Mast for Me!!!

Don't feel bad. I lost (read broke it on a powerline) in april. I filled it with my insurance company, Boatus, which I'd had for 2 weeks. I took the boat to Crazy Dave and He's ordering the mast and replacing it. PS. Best insurance experience ever. Boatus didn't bat an eye even though I was a new customer. As soon as I got the estimate to them, they cut a check. good luck Russell s/v summer luvin'

new mast

I am working on getting a new mast also. Millenium Rigging down in Morrisville, NC has given me a great price and will work with me by using some of the parts on the mast. Masthead, winches, cleats, steaming lights ect. I am in the process of giving them a detailed drawing to proceed. I am taking measurements from old mast. I have been talking with TOM. If you want the number send me an e-mail. Good luck SEARAY0301@AOL.com
