There were two shed collapses...

at two different marinas. The one at Bohemia Vista is a condo marina on the Bohemia River.

The second collapse was at Georgetown Yacht Basin on the Sassafras River, further south. I believe it was the D-Dock shed and appears to be the one in the pictures.

Both were said to be due to snow loading that occurred rapidly and became too dangerous to remove by putting men on the roof.

I know Bohemia Vista well, we kept our boat their last winter. There are no covered slips there. Bohemia Bay marina is next door, so that may have been where the trouble was.

The pics I posted seem to be from this marina, not from the marina on the Sassafrass as I was told when the pics were sent to me.

Found these pics of the collapse at Georgetown:

I am amazed at the number of masts visible in the two pics at the lower left the first page. I keep Easy Wind at GYB in season, but would not consider leaving her in the water over the winter. It is not as far south as one might think. Especially this year.

Hi I am a owner at Bo Bay. The marina is telling us to go through our ins. And to remember that we still have to pay all marina fees and assessments. I was luckey my boat was out of the water at another marina. But a rental was in my slip. The cost of this will put me out of boating.

So let me get this right, they are saying you still have to pay your sip fees even though it is unusable? In your bi-laws, (I'm assuming you own the slip) who is responsible for the mainteniance of the slip structure?

 I don't quite understand either. You are being asked to pay for a slip that you can't use? Also, what 's this "cost" that would put you out of boating?

Myself, I can't imagine it would be that hard to get out of slip costs if you can't use the slip.

If the marina will be back in service by the opening of the boating season, then pay the slip fees. Otherwise they are free to rent the slip to others. As to liability for damage from the collapse of the shed that is a matter for the lawyers and the courts.

I assume he owns his slip, therefore his insurance picks up the tab for repairs and subsequent increase in insurance.

Bohemia Bay Yacht Harbour was one of the first to introduce condominium slips to the Northern Chesapeake. Now boaters have the option of either owning or leasing their slip. Please call on us for detailed information regarding all the advantages of slip ownership. Slip management and financing is available to qualified purchasers

This is at Bohemia Manor...

on the Bohemia. If you look at the scenery beyond the docks (past the crane boom) you'll see it doesn't match the shoreline of the Georgetown Yacht Basin on the Sassafras, where the other shed cave-in occurred.

Your correct Dan, the topic heading should have been "Disaster on the Bohemia".

Yes I am a owner. We pay a quarterly dockominium fees for the running and maintain the marina. We also have a large assessment from repairs that were needed that are over operating budget. Also this year that just hit us with a second assessment that puts us at the point were after renting out our slip year round ( our boat is in drydock for a major refit ) we just brake even. Now thy are talking another assessment to cover what will not be covered by the ins and to make improvements. I am not rich, retired and just keeping my head up I can not afford to keep the slip and I own it outright with no mortgage. I thought that by buying and paying it off I would be able to keep boating in my retirement now it would be cheaper to rent from somewhere else. But you cant sell a half done boat and who would buy at Bo-Bay with all the cost on top of buying.

Wow, a challenging situation.

How do the other owners feel? I assume that every slip owner has a vote on the condominium corp, so if alot of owners are in the same situation, you might be able to approve only the repairs, defer improvements and spread the cost over a longer period...?
