Gabriel,

Make sure you do a police report. Also, make copy(ies) of police report for marina and post around on marina walls.

Distribute the police report to other nearby marinas and wildlife officers. Not that you will get motor back, but maybe make it uncomfortable for thief.

Also distribute brand, serial and model number to local motor repair and supply places. When ordering parts for specific motors some shops require serial numbers so they get exact match. The thief may be dumb enough to give it to them.

In addition to all connections, I also use security cable with heavy locks. The security cable one saved my motor when a motor bracket broke off boat.

Shit happens.

What a bummer! I worry constantly about stuff like that every year. We've had a few B&Es on the river where we are. Luckily, I haven't been hit yet and I hope that I never do get hit. Keep a close eye in your local newspapers. We had a large bust in my city that netted some thieves who were stealing to pay for their drug habits. One of the guys had a lot of stolen merchandise in a house he was renting. So people who were victims of these crimes were able to get some of their stuff back. I'm afraid that things are going to get a whole lot worse in this country before it gets any better, because of the economy and the jobless rate. I'm so sorry to hear about this. Sometimes the jerks get caught because they're the same ones who get caught breaking into houses.

There was an article in the last Good Old Boat magazine about replacing the motor mount. In it he discussed a way of locking the motor to the mount and boat to try to discourage thieves. I guess I will try to take mine off and on, but that sure is alot of trouble.
Good Luck

I'm really sorry to hear about your outboard.
What did you mean: torn right off the lever mount? Did they take part of the mount with it? How was it locked? Was it bolted to the mount?

Sorry to hear about that.

We had someone come off the lake and steal a few outboards off the drop levers on a couple sailboats. The boat next to mine got hit. I run a thick steel bicycle cable and lock through my outboard carry handle and then through the outboard mount so the whole mount must be disassembled. It is probably just enough to make it a PITA to steal. If someone had the time, they could figure a way to get it. I think the only reason I was not hit is the PITA factor.

Thanks guys. I will certainly cable lock, pad lock, pin down, tie up and all that when i replace the engine. Maybe now instead of sneakin' out for a whit around the lake, i'll be able to focus on my renovation down below.
