Dirty disgusting boat !

I hadn't been out to my boat for two weeks or so. I couldn't believe the millions of small green (mold?) spots covering the outside of the boat. I normally use Simple green because it's safe to for the enviroment.
It didn't really do much. I keep my boat on a mooring for the summer . Whatever I end up using is going to end up in Lake Michigan.
Has anybody used the new "green" soaps from West Marine?

Try the non-skid cleaners with Oxalic Acid

Try 3M Non-skid Cleaner. Boat guys around my area swear it's the best. About $20 at West Marine. You may be able to find it for less. RD

Wet the boat and pour a gallon on, wait 15 minutes and hose off. Simple

Get rid of those green spots...

I'm on Lake Michigan also. I assume that the "green spots" you refer to are the same ones I get in the summer. They are essentially spider excrement. They are hard to get off with regular cleaners unless you use a product such as Windex. I'm told that the ammonia in Windex does the job. What you can do to reduce the spiders is to spray your boat with an insectacide such as Ortho Max. That's what I use. I sprayed it on today since the spiders are finally starting to get bad.

You might consider giving Tilex a whirl. Shower cleaner, no scrubbing, spray bottle. Mildew and bug spots disappear.

I have tried multiple cleaners but had the best luck with Clenz-all. Its a paste and requires very littel elbow grease.

I have been watching this thread and in the past

others of the same sort. I have occassion to clean many things on my boat and in other peoples houses. The best that I have found so far is "Special Cleaner by Auto Magic"(a concentrate) and carpet machine concentrate, diluted and used in a spray bottle. If I need a lot I mix it in a garden sprayer and use it that way. The carpet cleaner is also deadly on insects.

Green Clean

I used simple green and have used the bio-degradable boat soaps and washes branded by West Marine and they have worked just fine. The citrus boat cleaner by WM that is a concentrate, I have mixed up in a bottle with H20 and use as a spot cleaner. Hope that answers your questions.

We might be able to make this place unfit for humans but cockroaches and termites have been around for a very long time. ;D

nothing greener than oxalic acid...

...which comes from the wildflower, Oxalis, commonly known as the Wood Sorrel. Another plant with high concentrations of oxalic acid is the rhubarb. People used to scrub their pots with rhubarb because the oxalic acid cleaned them so quickly.

Not only is oxalic acid biodegradable, but plants with high concentrations of oxalic acid compost especially well.

Just don't plan on cooking and eating rhubarb leaves. They are deadly. The stems are delicious.

yes, Ross, oxalic acid is a nephrotoxin, but...

...you'd have to eat more than ten pounds of the rhubarb leaves for them to polish you off. not a likely event, given how bitter the leaves taste as a result of the acid.
