My boat is at a mooring can and it gets tremendously buggy and dirty. I was wondering about putting a pump on it that would run off of the batteries and let me wash the boat with lake water. My boat is in lake michigan so the water would be fine to wash it with. I wanted to have it permanently installed and maybe even a dedicated through hull for this. Any ideas?? Does anyone have a system like this now?

One of our boats has

One of our boats has a par wash down pump installed aft. It delivers 50 pounds of pressure to a hose bib and we have a regular 25 foot garden hose to hook up to it. Works fine and has a dedicated seacock aft of the main engine. All the best, Robert Gainer

Cheap and easy

I use a 1/4 horsepower submersable pump that I can run off my generator. I tie a line to it and hang it off the lifelines.

I use a bucket with a line tied to it and a long

handled brush. A three gallon bucket is about the right size. Bring up the water dip the brush scrub rince with the water inthe bucket . repeat as needed.

Hi Mike, I have the same system that Ross has...

Our marina is brackish water, otherwise we sail in salt water year around. When a wash down is needed while cruising, especially after raising the anchor from a muddy stinky anchorage, the bucket comes in handy to keep things smelling and looking clean. I'll use a brush on the stubborn stuff, but usually a few buckets cleans things right up. No pumps to break, no DC juice consumed, no through hulls to mess with. Terry

Terry's right, keep it simple

Our answer is to sail into the teeth of the wind and waves in the Slot on SF Bay after we've "up anchor" -- it cleans the anchor and chain off right away. Only then do we head downwind. Reliable winds in a certain direction really help, and I know most of you don't have that, so, the bucket is a very good alternative. A few throws and drops and head out.

Mike, I hear ya bout michigan spiders

I'm on a Mooring on Muskegon Lake. The spiders and droppings have been the worst in 7 season's up here. i use bucket, soap, scrub, and more buckets for rinse. Get Black Streak Remover for tough spider stains. Pray for Wind, Lugeman

Wash Down pump

I had a wash down pump installed when I bought my 03 H356. I don't remember the model, but the pressure is fine for cleaning the anchor. I have a hose bib installed in the anchor well and one at the stern. It uses lake water for supply through a T off the head pick-up thru hull. Works great and keeps the boat clean when we are out overnight and we always use it to clean off the anchor line, chain and anchor when winching aboard. The mud in Kentucky Lake can get pretty nasty. West Marine has them in the catalog. Get the highest pressure they make for good cleaning.
