I'm a new owner of a 1986 Hunter 28.5. Was wondering if anyone can steer me in the right direction with regards to using the boats holding tank system as opposed to pumping waste directly out the boat. Any original schematics or assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

Within the head compartment on the starboard side of the head is a 3/4" water intake for the head, originally with a gate valve. Adjacent to that valve is a 1-1/2" overboard discharge valve with waste line comimg from a manual pump on the other side of a bulkhead to the starboard sail locker. That pump is connected to an 1-1/2" hose that extends down in the sail locker to a 'T', the lower end connected as a discharge line from the holding tank on the port side of the engine /transmission area with the holding tank under the forward part of the quarter berth. The opposite side of the 'T' extends aft to the discharge fitting (black plastic screw cap fitting) in the starboard side of the cockpit coamiing. There is also a 5/8" vent hose from the holding tank thru the transmission area and up into the sail locker to a vent fitting under the aft starboard rail.
The 1/1/2" discharge line from the head goes to port thru the back of the engine compartment over the transmisssion and into the holding tank. There is no 'Y' valve, so in order to be 'legal' you need to close the overboard discharge valve and remove the handle, so theoretically you can only pump out from the on-deck discharge fitting.
If you go on-line to www.huntertwentyeightfive.com , I believe there is a manual for the boat that has the plumbing diagram in it. The other larger black reinforced rubber hoses in the sail locker are part of the waterlift muffler exhaust system, but that's another story.

Siimply put if caught pumping overboard within any territorial waters and you are caught, you will be hung out to dry and walk the plank matey.

One suggestion before you leave the boat is to put white vinegar down the head and pump into the line to the holding tank. It is a good suggestion and ask why I suggested it.

Ok I'm curious - why the white vinegar
It kills the micro organisms that otherwise are stuck in the pipe and result in the typical head smell as they decompose.
