Cory, sorry yp hear about the theft. You may not remember me. I was (am) looking for a boat and you were giving me some good feedback about a Starwind 27 and the broker. I am still looking but had to put my search on hold due to low lake levels and no ramp. I am torn between a Newport 28 II and a Hunter 28.5. Hopefully all of this weather will drop enough water into the lake that we could launch a boat. Good luck in your hunt for your dingy.

For all the high $$$ living we have here in Kemah, i wouldnt have thought so many dinks would be stolen. Several have been stolen from Waterford Harbor Marina fairly recenly. They caught he guy . Someone recognised him from the security tapes. Anyway, I think you should post up a notice in all of the marina's 'hang out' areas. And in the Marine consignment shops in the area. Sorry for your loss, I know they aint cheap.

since these are such desirable items and so easily taken and so completely indistinguishable why not paint them like a 1960's hippy microbus. They would stand out in a crowd be and marked as distinctly yours. Someone could have moved yours to the other side of the marina and it wouldn't stand out as being new to that place.j

All Over
It's happening all over the area. I am at Seabrook, several dinghies, motors, etc. have been stolen there. It's happening at all the marinas in this area unfortunately.

The Kemah area is the 2nd or 3 lagest sailboat area in the US. The average marina around here has at least 500 to 7oo boats, and this place is nothing but one marina after another. If someone steals a dink and O/B they can probably sell it 300 feet way and no one would ever notice or suspect. Most of the dinks stolen from this marina were from the dinghy docks and not from the backs of boats. Either case, its easy pickin's. I just didnt expect it here. I guess we think that kind of stuf is limited to small towns and poor communities. Go figure. The 24 hour security Cams helped catch one of the theives, but I dont know the final outcome.

I haven't heard of anything going on here but that may be a result of so many live-aboards. There is always somebody walking around (just about). I came in last night at 11:15 pm and saw a bunch partying away at the picnic tables. Between me, my neighbor and the 3 other live-aboards on my dock, there is always somebody here so I feel safe. Stop theft, move on board

We had some bozo's on little Lake Grapevine (12 miles long) stealing outboards and other misc items from boats at the three marinas. They finally caught the guys (there were two of them). They were coming in on a small jon boat on the water, and just grabbing what was easy. Funny thing was, since they were coming in off the water, and it's a Army Corps of Engineers boat, it was federal! Ooops. Can't you see it now: Bruiser: Hey newfish. What you in for? Newfish: Um.... stealing fishing poles and dinghy's. Bruiser: Dat's cool. Your new name is Mrs. Bruiser.

Apparently dinks are not the only thing taken. Last August I worked on my boat on Saturday, went back on Sunday morning only to discover someone had broken in and stolen all my tools and spare parts. They even tried to steal my battery charger. They grabbed my tool box that I kept spare parts in and went through the entire boat taking tools, left the TV, filters, impeller and lubricants. I doubt they were sailors as they left brand new halyards. I'm not sure, but I think they came in by boat. Other than security cameras, I don't know of a way to prevent someone coming in that way. Several live a boards on dock.

Portafino Break in
There was a break in on Saturday night at Portafino. The office was gone through and petty cash was stolen and a new Honda outboard was stolen on a nearby dock. It looks like they came in a boat. From what I hear every marina in the area has been hit lately. I'll keep a lookout for your dink Corry.

Sorry to hear about the loss - I have had things stolen too, and I guess we just have to carry on. i was struck by the comment that the area is sold marinas and one of the densest concentration of boats in the country. I had a boat in Nassau about 30 years ago, and slips were very limited. I was on a waiting list at a place I think was called Watergate and that was the primo spot. I moved before I moved up the list. The slip I had was in a boat yard, but it was a pit. I would see rats walk across the yard on occasion, but there really was nothing much better except the Watergate place.

I live in Watergate, as a live aboard and will keep my eye out on this side of the marina. I heard of a few thefts in the past yr but nothing lately, i will let rigging Robert know to take a few extra rounds this week........aj

Cruel treatment
I heard of self denfence. What would happen in front of the law if you bobby trap the boat / dingy and post large warning signs on them? You need a way to disarm the stuff for yourself and prevent innocent people from getting hurt. E.g. "This property is protected by extraordinary means and may cause bodily injuries or even death. Enter at your own risk. The owner assumes no risk and you will be prosecuted to the fullest even after death." Any lawyers out there?
