Hi all,
Our dingy had a slow leak last season so I did a little search and I found Inland Marine had what I was looking for. I did the inner sealant and today applied the liquid rubber to the outside. I spent some time setting up some lines so I could do the top and bottom on the same day. I pleased so far with my results.

Please do a follow-up on the sealer. Our Zodiac has a slow leak and I can't find it. I've soaped the whole thing with no luck. It takes about 10 pumps on the foot pump every day or so. Zodiac says that some leakage is normal, but I would think that it would not be this much every day and don't think it was a year or two ago.

Hi Sum,
Inland Marine's website has tips to sealing those leaks. Somewhere I read powder the bottom than an ounce of water in the chamber before you pump to pressure. The wet spot is the leak. The rubber is still curing on the outside but it's dry to the touch ( we've had temps above 70 for three days). I'll let you know in a week if I've noticed any leakage.

AllUGet, how did you clean your dinghy before painting? I'm holding a can of the paint from Inland Marine but haven't mixed it yet. Our old rubber duck is probably good for a little longer without painting but I can't get it clean enough and don't want to paint over something that will make it flake. Did you use MEK on it before you painted?

I used acetone on the areas that I was concerned with since our dingy is made from hypalon, (on the can). The tips and FAQ sheet said use their cleaner, or I read laundry detergent in the second paragraph, to clean oxidation, slime, fuel, etc and let dry. Hope this helps.

Hi Sumner,
It's 60 degrees colder than last week so the dingy in the garage is a bit soft. I'll pump it up a bit because it is supposed to stay in the 50's all week, too cold for painting. The rubber coating looks great and I only had one drip.

Looks good, Seems like it was worth the effort. I have a d ring to replace on mine. Do you think I can remove the old one with just acetone? Were you worried about softening the seams at all when you wiped down the dinghy to clean?

Yep sometimes it is hard to tell if they are leaking or not considering the temperature changes. I thought that was what was going on with ours, but over 24 hours with the temps about the same from one morning to the next at that time of the day it would be lower.

Maybe their tech support could help you with the D-ring. I did a quick wipe since the boat was clean so I didn't worry about the seams. I sanded just enough to get rid of any gloss.

i had the same problem finding a leak in my Zodiac. I soaked the whole side of the boat and sponged dishwashing detergent with no luck then I got a phone call and left for a length of time. When came back I saw a very small area with a bubble nest. I couldn't find it it was so small. I think it was a dinghy dock casualty. This is a good resource for info and products:

A quick little follow up with the dingy. I turned mine over to paint the bottom and a small area started to peel. I rubbed it and more peeled off. I found two other spots on the bottom that did the same. I got in touch with Inland Marine and they believe some manufacturers use silicone on the boats. They are going to send me another rubber coating can and said to clean with Toululene before applying. My wife and I peeled 1/3 of the bottom and agreed to leave the rest wear off during the summer. Next spring we'll do it over.

You might also want to try another wax/grease remover before painting also. I use PPG DX330 or DX440 on car work and really like it. When I did the bottom paint on the Mac I used Sea Hawk's wax/grease remover. I think the PPG might be stronger, especially the 440. The key with any of them is to wipe it on wet and wipe it off while it is still wet. Don't let it dry on. You want it to lift the wax and then carry it off in the rag. You can get the PPG products from most any car refinisher supply houses where they sell paints.

Your dinghy is hard bottom right? If not forget all of the above as I don't know if you can use those products on PVC or hypalon. If you paint a car over and there is any silicone left from previous wax jobs you will get fisheyes and the paint can lift.

Thanks Sum. The part that peeled was the bottom of the tubes, frustrating. That should do it for the bottom since the hard bottom looks great.

I used toluene for cleaning before painting my dink. Worked well.
You must have LOW humidity and stable temp above 60 for the paint to stay on the primer.
Even with a good paint job, mine adhered very well & looked great, any rough abrasion will scuff the paint off.
