I was cleaning my inflatable the other day after returning from Catalina Island. A diver (boat bottom cleaner guy) walked by and suggested that I smear on a thick coat of wax, mixed with lots of cayan pepper. He said this would keep the bottom free of critters. Have any of you heard this? John Richard s/v Jack's Place

Cayenne

I've heard people mention cayenne pepper and doubt it could hurt anything. Dinks don't usually stay in the water as much as their bigger cousins so putting bottom paint on them doesn't make much sense (not to mention the mess it would make of your decks). Might be worth giving it a shot. The worst that would happen is you'd have to scrape it off. LaDonna

Look for a Dingy Wax

I use a special wax made for the Dingy that includes some anti Fouling. Sorry I can't recall the name. The Dingy (a RIB) stays in the water all year in Boston. I pull it up on the dock once a month or so and wash it down and put a new coat of wax on. It's a pretty simple process. -w

Dinghy bottom paint

Check the catalogs for a dinghy bottom paint. It comes in quart cans. Name brand is MR? (or some combination of those letters). It's latex-based and does not run, so it won't make a mess. I've used it successfully for several years on my Avon. A can will serve 3 seasons.

Get real bottom paint

John - If you leave your dinghy in the water you really should use a real bottom paint on it. There are special water based paints that will not hurt the fabric. If you do not and you get hard creatures attaching to the boat you will weaken the tubes. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

bottom paint

WM sells it, water based, works really well-kept my dinghy spotless all season (she's always in the water), and only needs minor touch up from scrapes. it even stays on when you fold up the dink!
