While I wait to find my sail boat, I am thinking of getting a late model dinghy.
Not a sail boat substitute but something to play around in the harbor & perhaps venture to Catalina island :)

~ 3 years old, 10 feet RIB with 9hp motor & trailer in decent condition, $2750 a decent value?
West marine, pacific & tohatsu are the brands.

Take a look at ebay. I just bought a new inflatable from a place on there called busters marine. They are blowing out all of their last years models of mercury inflatables. I just got a brand new 2013 8'10" air floor boat for $738 shipped to my door and they are even giving me a free cover for it as well. They have a number of different boats listed on there right now. Not sure if I saw a 10 footer exactly but I know there were ones bigger than what I got.

At that price you've got a lot of room for power options. That said, not sure I'd venture all the way to catalina on a 10' dinghy, but then again I'm dumb enough to be planning a trip on a laser which isn't much bigger.

Don't even think about going to Catalina Island with that boat. Ever.
Which one, the dinghy, or the laser. I dont think the dinghy would be much fun, but the laser would be a blast. It's been done before many times, and I've already done longer open ocean sails in one. Hell some kids did it in Optimists a few years back!

For your safety.
On a very calm day I would think about it but would I actually do it? I dont think so. I can just imagine the pounding on the boat and occupants, not much fun after the first five minutes and not to mention the added hazards.

Would love too, but don't have the time or space to embark on such a project.

I just discovered that there is such a thing called 'Boston Whaler,' and they are expensive. A 110 model would fit my need as a puttering around boat which can also be used as a tender for the eventual sail boat.

I only found one 110 on the local classified list.

It only takes a back yard under the 15x15 deck and 3 weekends!!!
8-ball dingy. It sails, it rows, you can put a motor on it if you don't mind paying the taxes. It is a blast to sail in 5-7 knots of wind in a protected harbor and works great as a tender. Pretty handy if you HAVE to make a fairly long trip away from the boat for ''operator error" issues. Made the 14 NM trip for 2.5 gal of diesel in about 3 hours. Towboat wanted $500....... needless to say we fixed the fuel gauge with a small portion of the $500 saved......always good to have an option.

@Bill, thanks for the project info, give me encouragement, but for now I think I will stick with the dinghy/tender option. By the way:
Used, 3 years old: ~10 feet with 9hp motor & trailer in decent condition, $2750 a decent value?

Your kit at 2750$, is it new or used ?
How old ? hard to say if $ is decent without knowing more.
I updated the info above; used 3 years old and very good condition according to the owner.

Well the 8-ball cost:
plans $50
2 sheets of 1/4 ply 50
fiberglass and resin ~70
hardware for sailing ~100
hardware for rowing ~15
wood for dagger board, rudder and mast ~25
total $310
I got the 8' oars for free as they were made of excess bits and pieces.
the sail I made myself ~50 ft^2 for $30
So even if you are a dumb bunny and have to start all over and double the price you are hard pressed to top $1000.
I knocked this out in about 3 days of 14 hours or 3 weekends.

2008 Boston Whaler 130 are listed ~$10,000. What are these models actually being sold for?
