Perhaps I am being too fussy but I noticed some damage to the transom of my dinghy. The vinyl has worn off, possibly abraded due to pulling the dinghy off of the sandy beach. A) should I be concerned and B) what are recommendations for repair. It would likely be easiest to repair if I could paint some type of liquid vinyl on the affected area. Is there any such material out there?

I would be if water started pouring into the boat and I was farther off shore than I cared to swim.

Short of that. Patch it. Go forth and abraid no more.

Gunni... that looks perfect. Do you know the significance of the number “4000”. I see others out there e.g. 4200, 5200, etc

5200 is permanent and will take up to 7 days to fully cure dependent on humidity and if it is in water. 4200 cures in 48hrs'ish.

4000 is a fast cure polyurethane that is very flexible and can handle being exposed to the sun. Paint it on with a small brush, a disposable flux brush works well.

I bought a can of liquid rubber from Inlandmarine.us. It supposed to be just for this type of fix. I haven't used it yet so I can't attest to how it works, but I bought patches from them which I used on a cut on a double seam, which I was told was impossible to patch. I applied the patch 3 years ago and it's still holding.

I purchased and applied the 3M 4000. We’ll see how that works.

I have used 5200 blobs for pinhole leaks in my Avon. Learned that after buying the expensive hypalon material and glue. But my 20 year old Avon seals up perfect with 5200. Yes you have to leave it for several days but that is not a problem for me. But seeing this I may switch to 4000... Just wish they came in my Avon grey coloring. :)

What I see is a bit of frayed cloth and some wood. Therefore, I would use a thin epoxy glue or resin to saturate the wood and keep water out. I doubt that the frayed cloth is structural and the epoxy will stop it fraying more and seal the area, leaving a hard surface that continued use won't harm.
Note; the area must be completely dry or nothing you do will work.
