While at the Annapolis Boat Show I purchased an inflatable and I am waiting for it to arrive. Now the question is whether to register it with the state(VA)or make it the tender for my boat which is US documented. At the moment, we will row it about. A motor may come later. We sail the lower to middle Chesapeake. Anybody got the pros or cons on this. Thanks

News to Me

Our boat is documented. Our inflatable is registered in VA with the numbers on the bow. It is 8.8 feet with a 3.5 hp motor. You mean we didnt have to register it in VA? I want to hear more.

not required

it is not required to register a tender to a documented yacht which is being used for routine ship's business. should the tender be taken to other waters and/or used for other purposes (e.g. you throw it into a trunk, take it to a nearby lake, and use it to pull skiers) it would need to be registered. it is customary to indicate a tender with the initials t/t (standing for "tender to") followed by the yacht's name. for example, s/v buoyant's tender should be labelled t/t buoyant. the advantage to not registering a dingy is that you don't have to pay the yearly fees. the disadvantage is that you can only use it as a tender.

I have a concern

I had heard that a dingy should not be named in a way that refers to the main boat. The reason for this was so that no one would be tipped off as to which boat at anchor might be unmanned. With "tt/ boat name" on the dingy, that's leaves little doubt as to which anchored boat is perhaps unmanned. Something to consider..... Elaine

Dingy numbering

I think John is right regarding how a tender is numbered. However, our's, an inflatable used with a documented vessel does have FL numbers; I notice that every other documented vessel in the marina with a tender also has the state numbers on the dingy. However, if you don't use a motor, the numbers are not necessary. Pete Burger KAILANI
