Need advice, I just purchased a used inflatable dinghy w/o propulsion (West Marine RU 260). I need to tow my 28’ sailboat to the mooring (transmission problems). How big/HP can I use on this dinghy? Your wisdom appreciated.

I guess I would go with transom weight since there seems to be some abiguity on HP.

I think the ambiguity is the model number - one is a rib-260 (10hp or 6.5?). The other is a ru-260 which is 4. Roll up vs rib.

Sorry, this is barely believable that people could mix up RIB and RU and then blithely state about 2.5 times more H.P. than is allowed.

And others give likes...

Well, he did say that he sometimes wonders whatever happens to all those people who ask him for directions! (I know he can take a ribbing!)

Hip-tow would be better if in restricted area, such as in the marina, where you might need to maneuver the sailboat into its slip. If out in the open going some distance with no “sharp” turnings a long tow would be the better.

Based on the capacity plate you can have a max 4hp motor on that dinghy.

Sometimes easier to manage tied alongside than to handle as a tow.
Thank you, yes agree with side tow, the harbormaster does the same and I did see the plate and HP but was a bit unsure of the weight requirements - thank you!
