Dinghy hoist

I have a Hunter 31 (1985) with davits, and lately just cannot manage to hoist my 9' dinghy aboard. Anyone got any ideas on this? I can use the winch or the main halyard, but has anyone installed an electric hoist or similar for this, or have a better idea?

I bought a set of 6:1 blocks with line from Garhauer Marine. Made lifting a lot easier. The advantage of having a 6:1 on both ends is I can turn the dinghy around and lift the motor end from either side. Garhauer's price was very reasonable.

Use blocks with rolling element bearings rather than plain bearings. It can make a very big difference, which is compounded as you add more parts of line to the reeving scheme. More noticeable when hoisting by hand, of course, but it sounds like that's what you intend to do.

I was hoping for a mechanical alternatiuve. I am recently disabled, and cannot pull much anymore

6 to 1 pullys on davits

My new 9.9 Tohatsu on the dingy is really hard to pull up on the davits. I had not thought of increasing the pully system to a 6 to 1. I assume you just use block with 3 sheives instead of 2. ? right. Anyone know where to buy these at a reasonable cost on the net?

I got mine for my last boat from Garhaur Marine. They don't have them on the web site, but they will sell them to you if you call and ask. On the new boat, I just installed a Garhauer davit system and they come as part of the package.

Use a couple of fairlead blocks to take the hauling parts to a sheet winch. The 'store' button at the top of this forum page has a cordless electric winch handle. Search "electric winch handle". I was afraid to look up the price, sorry With some adaption, an electric ratchet wrench from an auto parts or tool store may work out. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Hi Ian,
Just like Prime Time a fellow in our former marina put a small truck winch on his trawler that had a remote on a ~12 foot cord. He could control the winch while standing near his lifelines to guide the dingy aboard. Once onboard he would hook to the transom and flip it over.
