Is the dinette on this model readily convertible to a berth ? the 86 I have bought doesn't seem to be as there is nowhere for the table to rest on between the seating.

Which dinette setup.

Vic: Which dinette setup do you have? There was a 'U' shaped one and there was a fore and aft setup. Your table could have been modified.

Mine works

The table on my 1983 H31 drops down to the seats to form a double bunk. However, there were two issues with this. 1. The table rests up on the seats some 3/4ths of an inch, which makes it rather uncomfortable as this rise in the middle ends up being right in the middle of your back. I'm about to cut a couple of 3/4" boards to cover the seats around where the table lies to eliminate this height difference when the table is lowered. 2. When in the lowered position, the table sits wood-on-wood with the edges of the seats and creates an annoying creak with every rock of the boat. To resolove this, I placed a couple of strips of 1" wide sticky-back velco (fuzzy side only) as a buffer.

Fore and Aft

It is fore and aft, maybe the reply from Rob is how it is designed to work and is just a poor design ?

Table is about 1.5-2 inches wider.

Vic: The table should be about 1.5 - 2" wider than the opening between the seats. There are small blocks on the underside of the table to keep the table top from sliding fore/aft. While I agree that the thing is not perfectly flat, you should be able to make it up fine considering the back cushions are tapered. This is hardly an adequate accomodation for an adult anyway. Just let the kids sleep there. When we had our salon (saloon) interior redone, we specifically told them not to worry about accomodating this area as a "sleep zone". Who wants or needs 6-7 people (and all of their gear) on a 31 anyway?

If you have the "banquette" arrangement...

as we do on our '87, the table can drop down flush with the seating area held in place by moulding strips mounted to the vertical faces of the footwell in the seating area. A custom-made cushion for the table top completes the berth.
