Different slant on shroud tension

Near the end of last season I bought a Loos tension gauge and found that I had about half the shroud tension that is called for on my 1995 H23.5. My question is: with the proper higher shroud tension, will the mast raise and lower just as easily, without having to loosen and retighten the shrouds every time? Assuming that I do _not_ have to loosen the shrouds, I would guess that I'll notice it harder to attach and tighten the forestay, but as long as it can be done, that's OK. ...RickM...

Shroud Tension

I don't think you'll notice the difference in rigging the boat, but you will notice the difference in the leeward shroud tension when under sail. Depending on how bad the rig tension was, you'll also notice an improvement in handling. You could notice a difference when attaching the forestay.

Leave the shrouds

I don't think you'll be able to get the forestay attached with the shrouds fully tensioned. I used to loosen the shrouds for mast raising and then go thru the whole tensioning process again. Then someone pointed out that you can leave the shrouds set at proper tension and just loosen the forestay to raise the mast. Then you only have that stay to adjust in order to return the boat to being properly tensioned. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

Ron - just to make sure that I understand your point: Do you mean to say that with the shrouds fully tensioned, you don't think one can attach/detach the forestay without first loosening the forestay? That's fine, in fact I have to do that already. ...RickM...

23.5 shroud tension

I can't connect the forestay on my 1994 23.5 with the shrouds properly tensioned without doing one of two things. A. Loosen the turnbuckle on the forestay and retighten. B. Wrap the shackle end of the main halyard around the trailer winch, cleat the halyard off, then use the trailer winch to add additional tension along with the mainsheet raising system. Come to think of it, the winch technique probably places all sorts of nasty stresses on the sheave at the top of the mast. Loosening the forestaty is probably the way to go. Hope this helps

I Loosen Mine as Well

I found that putting some antiseize on the forestay turnbuckle threads makes the process easier. The stailess fittings gall real easy and you'll have to replace the whole thing. It will also make it easier to undo so be sure to use spit rings or somthing similar to keep it attached.

4:1 main tackle

Using the gin pole and mainsheet 4:1 the mast is raised and easily tensioned to allow forestay attachment with out any adjustments. I too will be tightening my shrouds this season to account for excessive slack leeward in heavy air. I don't anticipate any trouble attaching the forestay after however; I'll just cinch the 4:1 tackle a little tighter.

Question

What is the correct shroud tension for a 23.5? Did you contact Hunter, or is there some other source for the info? I've never checked mine, but it sounds like I should.

The oft-quoted rule

of 20% of the breaking strength of the wire is what I got from Hunter. The little manual that comes with the Loos gauge says this too. Note that it also says that this 20% applies to fractional rigs with swept-back spreaders like our H23.5. Loos says masthead rigs have less shroud tension; about 10%-12%. The higher tension for us is because without a backstay the chainplates are aft of the mast and most of the forestay tension is balanced by the upper shrouds. This is probably why you'll often hear that our lower shrouds have "a bit less" tension than the uppers.

shroud tension and rigging

IT takes some time to get the boat tuned just right and then we hate to go thru it again , I get things where I want them and then wrap some rigging tape around my turnbuckels to mark my settings, then I loosen things when I take down mast and simply retighten when I restep, it is on a h23 but dont see why it would not work on any boat, , everyone enjoy their sailing season , MIkeBacome
