My boat search keeps coming back to the Passage 42 as a favorite. Can anyone tell me if there are significant change/improvements between any of the model years. I'm thinking of changes that should be considered and even worth paying more for a specific year model because of changes.

There few, if any, significant changes from year to year. The older 42's (1990 and earlier I believe) had a higher boot stripe that made the appear to have super-high freeboard. I think the pre-90's also had an AC sound system. Generally, the newer the models will have an extra hull port or two, slightly different trim, but I know of nothing significant.

Pasage 42 VS Passage 420
The Passage 42, built from 1990 thru 1998. The Passage 420 started in 1998 and is still being produced. All of the Passage 42's are simular. The P-42 were built on 42'-6 hulls. When the aft-cockpit 43's were introduced they were originaly built on P-42 hulls. The 420 are a completly different boat. Hunter tried to cram all the stull that was in the P42's in to a slightly smaller (width, length & displacement) boat.

CNG vs LP
I too am in the hunt for a good P42 or 430. My only concern with the age of the boat was the CNG vs LP conversion. Conversion of your stove to LP will involve constructing an approved LP locker, new lines and venturi's. Not a huge expense, but something to consider nonetheless. I have been able to determine from Hunter that the conversion to LP took place with hull #181 (Jan'95 or so). I therefore have only been looking at boats after that date. This isn't to say that if a pre-'95 gem came along I wouldn't give it serious consideration. Good luck in your search!

As far as the tank conversion, another 42 owner simply asked Hunter for the lazarette insert used on the later boats to hold the LP tank. He added the necessary through-hull for propane ventilation, etc and it was done. He then cut a door into the lazarette from the stateroom like we have on the later boats. Not even a week's work.
