Hunter 30 Vero Beach
I have not yet sailed my latest project boat and was wondering what differences I would see in the handling between a 26' water balasted boat (Mac 26S) and a 30' shoal draft lead keeled boat (Hunter 30)?

I giggled.

I went from a shallow draft 23' boat to my 27' Hunter and literally giggled the first time I sailed it. I can guarantee that you will have a smile from ear to ear once you get going. When the wind blows, these just take a set and move out. These are sweet sailing boats!

Water ballast more tender

My understanding is that a water ballasted hull is more tender in the normal operating range (up to 15 to 20 degrees of heel) and similar to a shoal draft hull at higher angles of heel. A shoal draft keel is designed to ballast like the full depth keel. The difference is that the shoal draft keel is less efficient, providing less lift and more drag while close hauled. The most important effect is that a shoal draft keel won't make good a course as close tot he wind as the full keel. David Lady Lillie
