Anyone know the difference between the Barient #10 and Barient #10P winch?

I believe that one is geared and one is not. Don't recall which is which, but if you take the barrel off it will be real obvious.

Thanks for the links Merlin. The link for the 10P talks about a feature of that winch is you can let the line fill the winch to under to the top lip and it will hold in place, something like a self tailing winch.
As Dalliance notes, the 10 appears to have an extra gear inside.

I asked because there were 2 Barient 10's just went on e-bay for $78. I was watching and ready to place a bid when I got called out of the office. By the time I got back, the auction ended. Damm work.

Ward, what you have to do is get an eBay sniping program. I prefer jbidwatcher myself, use it on a Mac. It should be cross platform...

This allows you to enter an item, set a time for the bid (I usually do 2 minutes before the end of the auction) and a max price. Then, the program will automatically enter your bid, and eBay will automatically ratchet the auction up to your max. If the other bidders go less than your max, you'll get your object for less. If they go higher, then you don't win anyway. I also find it's a good way to control myself. It forces me to say "What's the MAX I'd pay for this?" and that way I won't be tempted to go higher during the heat of an auction... And you can set this early in the auction, and forget about it for a few days until you get the email that you won.

I could have at least entered a bid earlier a bit earlier but I was trying to find out what the difference was then got a call. Oh well.
I will try that feature of holding the bitter end today.

I got to try out the feature of the 10P this past weekend. After adjusting the jib sheet I put a few more wraps on the winch until the line pinched against the top ring of the drum.
Worked like a champ!! The sheet held well while close reaching in 15 to 20. No need for a cleat.

Thanks again Merlin for the links. I'll play with this feature some more but it looks like an easy way to lock the sheet while allowing me to flip it off easily.

BTW, having a great season and still going strong. Admiral was supportive at first, now she is pushing me to get more sailing in. Hope to take an overnight trip in a few weeks if the weather holds.
This sailing stuff is great!
