Our new to us Crown 34 has a Yanmar 2QM15. The previous owner, to my knowledge does not shut the raw water intake seacock when the engine is shut down. Everything I have seen/read indicates that shutting the intake is a good idea. Fuel off too? What is the general procedure for shutting this type of engine (or any marine diesel) down? David

Good Seamanship

I was told (maybe on this site)that good seamenship dictates all seacocks should be closed when no one is on the boat. I do close all of mine, a little afraid of a leak or hose or clamp failing, and don't want to chance it or worry about it. I do not close the fuel valve.

Shut Down

First, don't shut off a diesel after she's been running at cruise RPM without a slow down-cool off period, maybe five minutes at an RPM that's faster than idle but just above. Second, one practice is to run the engine at wide open throttle (WOT) before shut down to clear carbon, although I don't think many people do the latter. Finally, it's always a good idea to close seacocks when you are gone, but if you sometimes forget things, it's a good idea to leave the starter key attached to the intake through hull lever. (BTW, I don't turn mine off, but there is no question it is the right thing to do.) Rick D.

I could not sleep at night with the thought of

of leaving any seacock open. I shut the water intake and the head raw intake as well.
