I have a yanmar diesel engine M 25 that needs to have the starter replaced. Can it be rebuilt or should I just replace it. Any idea about cost?

Rebuild it.

A rebuild, at an automotive electric shop, will make it good as new. Not sure of price but over $300. You could call or write a large Yanmar dealer like Mack Boring.

I would rebuild it....I had mine rebuilt.

You didn't say where you are, but I had my starter for my Perkins 4-108 rebuilt at Fort Myers Auto Electric for the grand total of $78.00. New solenoid, new bendix, all new windings.If you are in the Tampa area there is a place up there that can do it. Most any decent size town or city will have a rebuilder who can do the job. Not sure it will be a low priced as mine, but before I went and bought a new one I would explore the rebuild route.A good shop will make it like new...

M-25 Yanmar???

I have an M-25 engine but it is made by Universal! Are you sure it is a yanmar? It seems odd two manufacturers would use the same model designations.dave
