Diesel Tank Guage Sealant

Hello, I have recently removed my diesel tank and clean it out. Based on the stuff that was in side, it was probably the 1st time it had ever been done. This is something I'd recommend, if you don't know the maintenance history of your boat. Anyway, I had removed the tank guage to drain the tank. There is a rubber or neoprene gasket that helps seal it, along with 5 screws. What is the best sealant to use to put it back together? And what procedure should I follow to ensure a good seal? I don't want the cabin smelling like diesel. Thanks,

the best way to seal that gauge to the tank is probably the cork gasket that comes with a replacement sender unit. It works and is easy to clean up if you need to do it again. Might be able to get one from a supplier who sells sender units, or make one from bulk material that you can get from an industial supply place. I maintain a fleet of fish boats at a fishing lodge and that is the only way I seal those things, MG

If you have a fitting that

defies you then Permatex makes a brushable pipe dope and gasket cement that will do the job. Tighten all the screws evenly so as not to get one side tight before the other.

Gasket

West Marine sells a replacement gasket separately for the Tempo sending unit that will fit many other sending units. Has about 5 holes for the screws to bolt the unit down. Can be found in the aisle where the sending units are located.I usually just reinstall the same gasket after replacing the sending unit whenever I clean out the fuel tank, and the gasket does not leak after that.
