My 1983 h34 does have a mechanical fuel gauge in the top of the tank. I'm not sure if it was an optional feature, or added by the previous owner. If I recall prior discussions on this site about this, the fuel gauge was not a standard item on this boat.
I installed a gauge on my 86 h34. The previous owner had cut a hole in the top of the fuel tank in order to remove sludge and clean the tank. When I bought the boat, the hole was still there as he had not yet sealed it. I squared the opening and made a metal plate that mounted to the top of the tank. I also cut a fuel gauge opening in the metal plate at the same time for the sending unit. The gauge is mounted in the cockpit in the stbd-aft small opening on the side. Works great.
Putting mine on is the best thing I have added. Order the 17 3/4" size Tempo mechanical gauge from West Marine. I cut a hole large enough to mount a 5" pry-off inspection port and mounted the gauge on that. Gives me the ability to check the fuel and tank condition and clean if necessary. I highly recommend it.
