Over the years our dinette cushions have picked up a distinct diesel smell. We've thought about dry cleaning but are afraid of possible shrinkage. Has anyone had success solving this problem?
Joe:Dry cleaning is really the best way to clean them. Many of the memeber have washed them in a washing machine (not my favorite way, but they claim that it works) You can also find someone that does cleaning of upholstered furniture too.The main concern here is the foam. Any type of cleaning may not get the foam clean. Again there was a post recently where someone washed the foam too.You may want to try some Frebreeze (sp?)
As an experiment, I took a small cushion home this fall and hand washed it in cold water with delicate detergent, then put it back on the foam and let it dry. I also sprayed Fabreze on the foam. It shrank visibly, and the foam still smells kinda funny. I would reccommend dry cleaning if you can afford it.
Steve:That is what I would have thought. The fabric would shrink. There have been several posts and NO one ever mentioned the shrink factor when washing the fabric. Maybe they did not care.I suppose it may depend on the fabric. Are your cushions/fabric original?
The fabric is OEM from 1988. I pretty much expected it to shrink, the question was how much? I put the cover back on the foam when it was wet, but it still shrank. I don't think I could have gotten the cover back on if it was dry. When I owned my 28.5, I had the cushions professionally dry cleaned, and it cost about $125. That was about 6 years ago. They came out great, no shrinkage factor!
We used a furniture attachment on our carpet cleaner with the same chemicals used to clean the carpets. this was done with the fabric on the cushions. After 2 days of thorough drying in the sun we "Fabreezed" them. We are very pleased with the freshness of the cushions and that it has lasted @ 6 months. We did this during the summer.
