so I'm taking all the cushions off the boat for storage at home, I didn't smell anything 'til they were in the house for a bit - pew! diesel (fuel, not exhaust). . is this normal?
Just lived on my boat for four months. When I came home, my wife said that all my clothes(although they had been washed) smelled like diesel. I didn't smell 'em. Get used to it. Air 'em out often. Cushions on deck in the sun or in the shop, not in the house.
First find and fix any diesel leak or find and clean up any diesel left from a previous leak...'cuz you can't eliminate any odor till you've first eliminated the SOURCE of that odor.
Then do a search here for "PureAyre" and read everything you find about how to use it....it WORKS. It's the only thing I've found that works!
I second Peggy's comments. I had an exhaust leak that left a residual odor and made our clothes smell. I fixed the leak, followed the PureAyre directions exactly and voila! No smell, even on the clothes!!
I once found some diesel odor permeating a hanging locker. The 20 year old fuel inlet hose was routed thru the back side of that locker. Not a drop of diesel was escaping... but it turned out that the hose was permeated with the smell and so was replaced due to its age.
Never a hint of diesel odor since.
You do not have to find an actual "leak" in one of those hoses to have that smell wafting around your boat.... if the hose is over 20 years old just replace it with new.
Our 23 year old boat, which we've owned for almost 13 years, has NO diesel smell. NO boat should have that smell. It means something is leaking somewhere. Find it and fix it.
Peggie's right about PureAyre. The website may be somewhat obvious...
My boat had that smell, its funny cause you do get used to it, even though it stinks. My entire engine bay was affected. When I repowered I cleaned cleaned, still stunk till I pulled out all engine soundproofing was contaminated.More clean clean and paint I got it, then fabrizzed everything else . I also used a couple air sponges. Red
