Dear Peggie, How do you remove diesel fuel from a nylon anchor line? I keep a second anchor, chain and nylon rhode along with a diesel generator and seperate fuel tank in the aft lazzerette of my Hunter 34. In the process of polishing the fuel the contractor reversed his hoses and sprayed diesel fuel all over the nylon rhode along with numerous other places. I cleaned up the mess and ran the nylon line through the washing machine with detergent and the line still has an odor that is very strong. Your help will be appreciated. Fair winds and following seas, Charlie

Charlie Have you suggested that the "mechanic" pay to replace your rode? Stu

I agree with Stu,

However if they wont do that stretch the rode out where it can air out, the smell will go away eventually.

Put it in a washing machine!!!!

If the amount of rode will fit into a washing machine, put it into a mesh bag and simply launder it on the 'gentle' cycle. Otherwise, get or borrow a large tub (or even bath tub) pour in detergent and let it soak after adding STRONG detergent. If you dont have a mesh bag simply tie the rode into a 'daisy chain' of slip knots or firmly coil and bind it so it doesnt come loose and make 'rope salad'.

Washing Machine, Good Idea; Maybe

I'd like to suggest doing it at a laundry mat, in one of those front loaders the agitator causes problems. Don't ask.

Why not ............

throw it overboard and leave it in the water a few weeks. Since oil floats may it will rise out of the rope. Worst case it will come up green and slimey but that will be easier to fix than diesel

Come On, Daryl!

throwing the line in the water so the oil will float out and pollute it is a really bad idea-or do you live somewhere where you don't get fined for oil spills? as I recall, the fines can be 5 or 6 digits for a small spill -a sheen on the water- from fuel

Hey Chuck

After going through a washing machine how much oil do you think is left in that line? I suspect the average vessel pukes more out the exhaust when it starts and runs a few minutes. Ever spent any time at a fuel dock? That tree hugger mentality fuels stupid regulations.

well Daryl, you didn't say it was washed first, nor did I say i agreed with the regs-only that they exist-and yes, I've spent a lot of time at the fuel dock-but an even bigger issue, in my opinion, is the number of diesel trucks that really need an overhaul and never get touched-also diesel is really pretty benign stuff compared to heavy oil pumped out of tanker bilges.

Charlie, as friend of mine swears by using "Right Guard" deodrant (the old stuff in a black and gold spray can) he said it was a old trick used by oil burner repairmen to keep the clothes oder free.I have never tried it but for the couple of dollar it is worth a try. Another thought is to contact a local fuel oil company and see if they can recomend any thing, (they have the same problem especial when they overflow a tank in a home) Good Luck !
