Diesel shuts down after running about 5 minutes

I spent most of the summer of 2005 in the slip as my Universal 3 cyl would run for only about 5 minutes before shutting down. Seemed to be starving for fuel. My regular mechanic gave up after troubleshooting for days. Found another guy who had a unique method of troubleshooting. He temporarly replaced all the fuel lines with clear plastic so that the fuel flow could be observed. He started the engine and watched. After about 4 minutes, the fuel could be seen running back into the tank as the engine shut down. Apparently there is a check valve in the Raycor filter head that failed. We replaced the Raycor assembly and have not had a problem since. Try it before throwing expensive lift pumps and such at the problem.

It could be

the filter screen in the gas tank. It happen to a friend on mine in a Hunter 376. It sure sounds like a fuel probelm. Waf

...he never asked one. All he did was give us an idea to dwell upon when the problem is presented to us sometime in the future. Thanks, Bob. ;)

Five minutes is more than enough

to pull away from the slip. Sorry, no excuse for not going out. I'm glad you found the problem and thanks for sharing the solution with us.

No trick question but…

If he’da been a registered user, we could’a checked his boat profile, so if any of our friends had the same problem with the same boat, we could recommend a fix, or something to check with that engine type. And yes, I’m subtly getting on the case of your nonregistered folks. It’s free, it’s easy, heck even I could do it! Later, eh! Ferg
