Just got the CG doc for s/v "Free Willy" yesterday! Yeah all ahead full! I have built templates for the bulkheads and am going to remove old diesel this week. The Volvo Penta 2003 28 hp is my next focus at the house. I want to get it running and then some maintainance, impellor, clean h/x, oil change, etc. All the stuff I've been soaking up on this forum. So, my question is: the coolant resevior is missing and I will need to get water to both the fresh and raw water inlets to attempt to start. Can I use an automotive (read cheaper) resevior for the test run and even on board boat? The pics show a nipple going in at top and a nipple going out at bottom, just like an automotive resevior, but is it pressurized, are car reseviors pressurinzed? I asume you can tell if they use a radiator type pressure cap? nd i think ya'll said use a bucket with garden house in it for raw water? Can I bypass the control head and key to test run the engine? It came withot a key!!! the ignition on my old boat has no key as well. So , no ignition key, no resevior, and i want to attempt to run it before installing, thanks. Patrick

oh, the Hynautics steering cylinder is rebuilt and reinstalled in the boat. Just to keep you updated on current news r/t 33 morgan OI formerly called "free boa. free boat on this forum.

Coolant reservoirs come in both pressurized and un-pressurized. If the system is open to the reservoir then it is pressurized. If there is a separate pressure cap with a line to the reservoir then the reservoir is un-pressurized. An automotive reservoir is just as functional as a boats but the un-pressurized cannot be substituted for a pressurized one.

The system is pressurized to raise the boiling point of the coolant. For a short bench test, an auto reservoir would do. For raw water, the bucket trick works fine.

The "ignition" switch actually activates a fuel-shut-off solenoid. The solenoid can be jumped to a 12V battery. You'll need a pos. and ground wires.

I still don't get it, sorry guys. "if the system is open to the resevior then it is pressurized"? The system is closed i guess? According to pic of the one that goes with the engine its just say a small 1/2 gal bottle with a hose out the bottom and one out the top of the bottle-not the cap. I thought it was a resevior to allow for exspansion of the fluid once the thermastat opens. If pressurized, how much pressure? 15lbs like auto? sorry I about dumb questions. I could i suppose see if there is a Volvo penta dealer and see what they want for the correct resevior-just figured that it was a low tech tank and anything would work with outlet at bottom and inlet from side. But that is why i asked this forum. Thanks
