Diesel Noise

I have a 12hp Westerbeke diesel and it's very loud. Is this normal for thisengine?. Someone told me it's loud because it only has 2 cylinders.

they are loud

the one and two cylinder diesels are typically more noisy than their big brothers. As long as the sound doesn't change over time, nothing to worry about

You could have something that's picking up..

an engine harmonic. Does it have a water lift muffler? Is the engine compartment sound insulated? Are the engine mounts tight?

It does have a muffler. The engine mounts seem tight. There is nosound deadening material in the engine compartment.
