one more thought ....

One more consideration: If we are talking just a few dollars I generaly try to give my buissiness to the local store or marina. I want them to stay open and I think there are way to many Mega stores in this country allready! Try to get some advise for your boat at Walmart!!!!

Reinhold, I'm with you.

I've never walked into a Walmart. When I drive past the one near east Bremerton, I flip it off. I know, childish, but they took out a beautiful pasture and rustic barn. Now our county is getting a THIRD. Criminal, can't believe it. They drive large stores out of business not to mention the mom and pops. Now my daughter is worried about her job because one is coming to Shelton. And Walmart is non union. Grrr. I didn't say something political, did I?

...Not to mention that everything they sell is from another country. Dennis

Now That We've

exhuasted all ideas, I propose that we get togther at the truck stop, located conveniently next to the diner by the marina, and blend some clear with some red for breakfast, then trundle down to the local EPA office to assure ourselves that our dipsticks have been dipped, keeping the nefarious environmentalists on the trail of the Beamers while those of us in our 40 year old VW bugs let our emergency brakes off gently into those good sloughs. *pop Stu

Obviously

In spite of the overwhelming views against Walmart in this thread, it would appear from their sales that they have many more people who like them than dislike them. I go to Walmart, because you can't beat their prices, selection, quality, etc. I also support small businesses when their prices are competitive, and it can be done. Not a small business, but Target could not compete with Walmart. They are now very successful with another niche. As far as getting boat advice from Walmart, I can get all of the advice I want on this and other forums.

A question for Frank in Charlottesville...

You mentioned in your posting that the shelf life of diesel fuel is now considerably shorter than it used to be due to new methods of refining. I'm wondering, does that also apply to gasoline? It seems to me that gas just doesn't store as well as it used to. I always keep 2-3 five gallon gerry cans around for all the small motors I need fuel for (generator, dirt bike, lawn tractor, outboard, etc.) and it seems that the stuff just won't fire after even a few (3-6) months of sitting. I use Sta-bil fuel stabilizer at the recommended ratio and it seems to help a bit, but it still seems that gas from a few years back lasted a lot longer. Any thoughts on this? Jeff

Diesel Fuel Stabilizer

To answer the questions about what fuel stabilizer to use I'd recommend Sta-Bil with Biobor JF. Sta-Bil. Sta-bil makes both a gas and a diesel formula and I've used the gas version for the outboard and a diesel version with Biobor JF added for the diesel. http://www.goldeagle.com/sta-bil/index.htm FAQs: http://www.goldeagle.com/sta-bil/faqs.htm The diesel version of Sta-bil, with Biobor JF added, has a green-on-white label (not shown) where as the gas version has a red label. The Sta-bil portion is for stabilization and the Biobor portion is the anti-microbial additive. Info on Biobor JF: http://www.hammondscos.com/fuel/biobor_jf.html

I just emptied my tank of 25 gal of fuel and it

looked OK. I bought the boat 2 years ago and have put in approximately 15 gallons myself. I doubt I've used more than 5 gal. The boat was not used last year. i.e. all fuel is at least one year old and some at least 3. No black blobs in the fuel and it appears clear/yellow. Should I discard it? I removed it so I could remove the tank for inspection and cleaning. Geoff

Old Fuel

If you have already removed the old fuel, You probably shouldn't put aged fuel back in the tank, unless you cycle through your fuel pretty quickly. Diesel fuel does have an age and will degrade over time. For the record, On road diesel has a higher cetane value(normally about 45) than high sulfur diesel or heating oil, which is normally over 40.

Jeff M re: Gasoline Question

Jeff, my experience with aged diesel fuels comes form heating oil tanks and the problems we have with old fuel in seldom used generator tanks. I don't really have an experience base with aged gasoline as most of what we sell is turned rapidly by gas stations. Refineries using catalytic crackers have been around awhile, so the problem you are seeing is nothing new in the last few years. I would recommend you purchase a branded gas that has additives in it, or if you choose to buy "no name" gas, that you purchase and add an aftermarket additive package to get the most out of your engine. I can recommend Fuel Management Services as a quality supplier of additives, check out their website at fuelmanagementservices.com. I note they have a gas additive, but I have no experience with it. Their president, Ed Kitchen can give you the low down on diesel stabilizers. Best, Frank http://www.fuelmanagementservices.com/gasoline.htm

Fred .... Why argue?

You'll get no argument from me, just fact. Don't want to beat a dead horse, but I have been testing this stuff (petroleum) both commercial and Navy for 10+ years. I can assure you that even though the dye is added for tax purposes, the EPA moniters the sulfur levels in the two colors (As Frank has stated very well).

Old Diesel

I will jump into this thread with my related concern: I have big jug of diesel that was in the lazarette with a makeshift cap (PO) for the three years I have owned it. I am afraid to use it now. How do I get rid of it? Take it to the recycle oil container at our Transfer Station? Other ideas?? Roger C27 #5012 &Mabel Cape Cod

Taxed Fuel - IRS Showed Up Today!

I'm starting to believe in cosmic karma. After writing two responses to this thread, who shows up at work today - the IRS Fuel Inspection Officer for our area. She dipped samples from our diesel fueled delivery trucks looking for evidence of dyed fuel (non-road taxed). She left with a list of 20 of my customers to whom we sell dyed, off road fuel. She will visit those folks and make sure they are using the fuel in off-road applications and not putting it in their cars to avoid taxes. Frank

You don't really think that they're not watching..

what gets written here? Have you ever heard of 'Project Echelon'? Get real, the powers that be hate any form of self-expression, especially from such a 'fringe element' as sailors!

Roger....Old diesel

You might try finding a neighbor who heats his home with oil. We removed some storage tanks here at work several years ago. I took the remaining fuel home and ran it through my furnace. It was more than likely from the 1960's and it burned fine. Oil furnaces are rather forgiving as to what is burned in them, as long as it is filtered. Bryon Thomas "Shore Leave"
