My old (1987) Westerbeke 30 produce very heavy white smoke. Start only with start fluid. The head and injectors are rebuild. Compression test: over 425.What should I do?

Sounds Like Water in the Fuel . . .

Usually white smoke = water. How fresh is the deisel? Any opportunity to try some fresh fuel that is known to be good? Not sure how you would do that short of draining your tank - ugg.

If it is water.

I eliminated the tank and one filter as problem sources by connecting an external tank right to the primary engine filter. For around $35. you can buy a 6-gal. poly tank with the squeeze bulb. Cut the outboard motor connector off and clamp the hose right onto your primary filter. Now you have a known source of good fuel. And the squeeze bulb makes it real easy to bleed off any air.

I have to agree.

Not to disagree with Jim, but I don't believe that you are getting water from your fuel. This is what the fuel filters do. But, white smoke IS an indication of water (head gasket may have been defective). Blue smoke is Oil buring. I'd also get the block checked. Good luck, keep us posted!

Diesel's

You said you use starting fluid to get the engine started. From what I have read on this site, you should never use starting fluid in a diesel engine. Your cause may be from ring, cylinder, or seal damage. Check in the archives or call Thorson Marine for more information

Right on Steve

Good point Steve . . . I was trying to think how the water would get there and the water in the fuel was the best I could do. Gasket sounds more likely for continued smoke and the problems starting. I would assume that he has checked the water filter on the fuel line.
