Diesel gunk

My Yanmar 8 recently blew the exhaust manifold, and the whole engine and compartment is coverered in oil/soot/gunk from the manifold. Can anyone recommend a good product to get all this gunk off?

Sorry to hear that. There are a number of solvents which are effective. One of the cheapest being Grease Off you can find in most hardware stores. Hexane will also work if you have access to a supply house and have reasonable ventilation when using it and won't harm the hoses. Most of the common detergents are surfactant based and not concentrated enough for this mess.

I would try GoJo waterless hand cleaner first. It does a great job cleaning up oily soot from my kerosine lanterns when I trim the wicks on the kitchen table and also for cleaning the hands of diesel mechanics.

Funny you used the word gunk. There is a degreaser and engine cleaner named Gunk that works very well. You can get it at any Walmart or auto parts place.

At The Dollar Store

You can find a product called "LA Awesome." It comes in a plasic spray bottle and costs a dollar. Spray it on, wipe it off. Works great

try Simple green full strength-it does a great job of cleaning up diesel

Dawn dishwashing liquid detergent is an excellent grease cutter.. it is relatively mild but cuts oil and grease quite well... It is used by wildlife experts to help rehabilitate birds and other animals that are caught in oil spills.. Should do the job nicely.
