Phils point about Home Oil heaters is valid
The ammount of cleanliness or water in most home oil heaters is much more tolerant than a diesel engine. In fact there is no comparison.A home oil heaters will just burn the gunk or evaporate and atomize the water and it wouldn't even blink. Just a little water getting through into closed high compression of the cylinder of a diesel engine can cause a lot of damage.Diesel engines need spotlessly clean diesel, home oil heaters can burn very dirty diesels or oils with little long lasting effect .I keep my fuel tank full for the winter and have had no problems with water in fuel. Maybe I'm just lucky. I agree with some on here and feel more water enters the tank via the fill hole with rain or a bad gasket than with condensation, but why give it all that volume of "humid air" in an empty tank to get any condensation started. I fill up
