What routine maintenance so we need to do to our water separators? I have a 1985 Catalina 30 with a Universal 25 engine. Any help would be great!!

Engine Filter

Don't know if the Universal has one or not, but my Yanmar has a filter on the engine in addition to the Racor filter/seperator. If you have one be sure to check it also. I make a habit of changing mine every year.

Don, I have a Yanmar YSB12, single cylinder 12 hp.. It has a fuel filter on the engine. I have a racor filter before the Yanmar filter. I change the racor filter element but have not cleaned the yanmar engine filter.I bought the Catalina 30 1977, two seasons ago. I have been reluctant to open the Yanmar filter. My questions to you is: How to open the Yanmar filter and what to do and how to after that. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, John

You should change the filter on the engine as the filter media inside it will eventually deteriorate and clog up the injectors if you let it go too long. If you ever changed an oil filter on a car, the process is similar - unscrew the filter housing from the engine and simply replace the filter element inside it. It helps bleed the fuel system if you can fill the thing with clean fuel before replacing it. Regardless, find the fuel line which leads from the engine's fuel pump to the filter. There will be a small handle on it which you pump to manually feed the filter. Open the air bleed screw on top of the filter housing and pump that handle until all the air is out and which point you will see only fuel coming out the loosened bleed screw hole. If you are unsure how you did, just run the engine for 15 minutes to see if it stalls - if not, you successfully bled the system.

Put a bucket under it

Put a bucket under it to capture anything that comes out while you're emptying the housing, replacing the filter, and refilling the housing. If you don't have space for a bucket, a good quality and appropriately sized plastic bag (I've used zip lock freezer bags before) works too. You can tape the opening to hoses, etc in the engine area to hold it open. Then dump the bag contents into a better container to take to your local waste fuel/oil depot. There's also really absrobant towels made especially for fuel and oil. A common name for them is diapers. Always keep a couple new ones always under the engine for general leaks, and put down a bunch when doing fuel filter changes, etc to get anything your bucket misses. Craig
