Can anyone help with ideas on how to get diesel out of a matteress...The diesel fuel tank is located behind the bed in my boat... the tank sending unit leaked out of the gasket when i filled it and leaked onto the mattress.. does anyone know how to get the smell, etc. out of it... We have one of those expensive custom made mattreses...we've tried airing it out, sprinkling baking soda on it... sprinkling pet oder remover under it... all have helped but it's still not good enough...

Diesel on mattress

Tom, I have an aerosol product called "The Natural"...of course, all natural, containing "limonene", which is an all natural citrus extract. I have had mechanics track grease on my new commercial grade office carpet, sprayed it on, and wiped it off in a few minutes, 100% gone. Have also used it on other fabrics with great success. It has enzymes which devour grease and oil products, and smells great too.. You can't get this commercially, but check in the stores for a similar product using all natural citrus extract. Not sure of results on what would now be an older stain...If you get stuck and can't find anything similar, I'll ship you a can (free for a fellow sailor) which I get wholesale from the dealer, a friend who relabels it for his carpeting business. Call me tollfree 1-888-696-7690 Joel Langdon Mount Joy, Lancaster County PA.

Home Depot

You can also find citrus cleaning products at Home Depot. They have a section where they stock commercial cleaning products. Not sure if it is the same stuff or has the same results, but worth a try...

Removing the source is the only way to rid yourself of the odor. Suggest you take the mattress to a professional upholstry cleaner and have them use one of their extractors on it. The other alternative is to find a mattress rebuilder and have them remove and replace the affected material.

IG Pink may work e-mail for sample!

There are two types of stains in vinyl, permanent ones and removable ones. If the stain is solvent based (e.g. marker pen) part of the stain can be removed but there is a "shado" where solvent has dissolved some of the vinyl and invorporated the stain. Other types of stain (newsprint is a good example), ball point (usually) penetrate down into the pores and are dissolved in the plasticizer. IG Pink (or our other cleaner/conditioners) can usually remove stains that are not chemically bound in the vinyl. I am not sure which type of stain this, it's worth a trip to the post office to find out. If there is a "tar-like" residue in the deisel then this will leave a yellowish stain that will be permanent. Just e-mail me via www.IslandGirlProducts.com with a mailing address and promise to e-mail with the results. Incidentally, if the surface of your vinyl cushions had been sealed with Silkenseal the vinyl may well not have been stained, only the surface sealant- this certainly is trueof marker and ballpoint on bottomsider cushions. Thanks Jim Willis Owner, IGP PS Avoid citrus full strength on vinyl -it will dissolve it (and polystryrene and the foam stuffing too!) D-limonene is a terpene (like terpentine).

diesel smell

We had a similar problem with our 272 when we bought it. We tried a lot of things but the thing that worked the best was to mix up a fairly strong solution of vinegar and water and soak the mattress with it. I put the mattresses on the deck by our house and poured buckets of the mix on it then let it dry. We flipped it every so often.

diesel fuel spill due to faulty design..

so why is it that hunter put the overflow vent below the fuel inlet???? Just realized on my hunter 34 that the stern overflow vent is lower than the diesel inlet.. so plan to raise the vent in next few weeks.. they did this back in 83!!!!

Jim: Doesn't make sense to have the vent lower than the inlet. It seems to me that if the vent is higher than the inlet you are going to overflow fuel from the fill. Am I missing something?

Thanks for the imput

Thanks for the sugestions... We've been out of town for awhile and I just had a chance to read the replys... I'll let you know what works... also the fuel gage sending unit was added by the last owner through the top of the tank.. he used a funky rubber gasket that leaked when the tank was full... that's what caused the diesel leak in the first place...I've replaced the gasket and stopped the leak...
