had a diesel fuel leak. leak fixed but odor remains. fuel found its way into main bilge in salon and odor permeates entire interior when enclosed for a/c.

Beyond the obvious advice to Clean, Clean, Clean there is a spray product called Pure Ayre that advertises being "100% Readily Biodegradable". The produce is available online at PureAyre.com. It works very well. The smell from our fuel tank leak and replacement problems were finished off by using this product. Best Wishes.

BTW: We will be in Baltimore for the 4th and 5th. I could bring you a bottle!

Had the same issue on my boat. Did some of the same things already mentioned. We also placed a whole box of scented fabric softener dryer sheets inside each of the seat cushions and mattresses. Gotta keep the Admiral happy!!

Look for an environmentally safe detergent and apply with fresh water after turning the bilge pump off. Then go sailing and let the water slosh around before turning the pump back on to discharge the emulsified liquid. You may have to repeat a couple of times.

We leave an open can of fresh coffee grounds, just an inch or two in the can, and the cabin smells great. First of course I had washed out the bilge with Tide and H2O and sponged it clean.

The evaporated fuel leaves a film on every surface in the boat, so you'll need to do a thorough cleaning. Take the cushions and mattresses home to air out in the sun for a few days, and then liberally apply Pure Ayre. I don't think you'll find it at WalMart, you'll probably have to purchase online. If you go to Amazon, don't buy the more expensive "Marine" version, get the cheaper "Pet" version. It's the same stuff, just labeled (and priced) differently.

Repeat as necessary until odor is gone or you grow to like it.

thanks for the suggestions-pureayre was a favorite mentioned and I ordered a quantity from amazon. I'll try that and vinegar along with the coffee grounds and that will make the boat fresh as a breeze!

Nothing at all wrong with a slight coffee odor in the boat!

I had the same issue a week ago. I successfully removed all the odor doing this:

1. Washed the entire bilge with several bottles of dawn dish soap and a swimming pool of water.
2. Used a high power fan through the boat. I left the doors open for several days and the fan on (Sam's club has a very nice fan that is designed to dry carpets. It has low center of gravity and is very powerful)
3. once the bilge was dried, I covered the entire bilge and engine compartment with fresh ground coffee. The coffee did the trick and removed the smell completely.

If that hadn't worked, I read Listerine is useful as well, and was prepared to try that. Fortunately, the coffee did work, which is good, since it smells so much nicer than Listerine.

congrats on designing a system that works. it's a terrible experience and one that you hope you don't have to validate your system ever. my odor problem has gone into remission. i tried so many things i cannot credit anyone or two. i was afraid of using coffee grinds for fear it would keep me awake all night!!
