When I sleep in the aft cabin of my Hunter 356 there is a bad diesel odor. I have checked all the connections on the fuel tank and have not detected any leaks. It is almost unbearable and welcome any suggestions to get rid of this odor.

Couple of checks...

Ask Peggie if fuel hoses can permeate. 1. Check your fuel line for leaks (from the tank to the engine). 2. Check your injectors for leaks. 3. Check your fuel return line for leaks. 4. Check your exhaust system for leaks (CO detector might be a good idea). 5. Check the fill hose (from the deck fitting to the fuel tank). 6. Check your vent line (from the tank to the vent fitting). 7. Check around the fuel guage. 8. Check the bilge for signs of oil or fuel. 9. Inspect the breather vent on your engine. 10. Check your fuel tank. When checking hoses, don't assume that the parts of the hose that are hard/impossible to see are OK. It could be a small fuel leak on the engine (only when it is running). In this case the fuel might evaporate when the engine is hot and when the engine is not running, it won't leak at all. Good luck in finding the cause.

Something simple...

I was smelling fuel whenever I opened the boat this spring and would see a slight film on the bilge water under the engine, but could not find a source. Finally I took a clean paper towel and slowly wiped it over every fuel location until I found the banjo nut on the fuel line into the primary filter was weeping. A slight wrench application and no more smell! Intrepid North East, MD

Ditto what Dan said...

I had a similar diesel odor in the aft cabin on my H29.5 (previous boat) and only found it by the paper towel method Dan describes. Tightened the offending fitting, cleaned the area of seepage and all was well after that.

356 aft cabin odor

Are you sure it's diesel? if it's sort of sweet/swampy, you may have a permeated sanitary hose. the 356 has a very long run to the tank-17 feet! our hose permeated in 3 years.

Venting odor and heat.

Shown around an Island Packet last week. The owner complained about heat from engine in rear berth. He installed a small vent high in the stern and put a small computor fan to exaust the heat. This would move odor as well. His was set up to run whenever the engine was running. But could be put on a switch.

Blower

Recently I delivered a yacht 500 mile or so and the stench from the motor was terrible. Not just the diesel smell. Luckily they had a bilge blower installed. A flick of the switch and the air was fresh again. Would it be possible to fit one to your yacht??

Check archives...................

There is an article/post showing an install of an exhaust fan/blower that sucks air out of the engine box and vents it outside.

356 odor

we didn't have a diesel odor in the aft cabin on our 356, but the heat from the engine after a motor run made the cabins (main and aft) hot. we installed a 3" exhaust blower in the compartment over the transmission, used 3" rigid schedule 40 pipe to take air from the engine compartment and duct it aft, into the stern locker near the macerator thru hull. from there, we used flex tube to bring the hot air over the waste tank. After we tie up, we open the aft locker and let the hose hang over the stern. this setup does a good job of venting the engine compartment-heat and odor-and doesn't put a vent opening in the stern where it could get pooped by a wave.
