I have a Hunter 34 1984 I have owned it about four years and love it. However, I have had this diesel leak all this time, this year I was going to fix it. Its a Yanmar 3 the leak is on the side of the fuel filter. So far I have replaced the filter housing, all the related O rings the line from the fuel punp and the O rings. This lasted two days and the leak was back. Its now leaking at the O rings once more. All fitings & connections are very tight. The local Yanmar Dealer is of no help. Could the fuel pump be the problem ? To much pressure?

Banjo washers.

Willy: You mention o-rings, are you referring to the copper banjo washers? These are not reuseable except in an emergency. Once you compress them they are basically used up. You may want to clean the engine and dry it. Then sprinkle with some talcum powder to see if you can determine where the leak is coming from.

I Agree

Sounds like it is the banjo washers. I replace mind when they start to leak which is usually after about four years. Check the word "banjo" in the archives and you will find many references to them.

Permatex

Try coating the (new) copper banjo washers (both sides) /w "Permatex" avation gasket compound.

How tight is very tight

Sometimes you can overtighten stuff. The copper banjo washers and particularly an O ring, can be ruined by too much of the tighten action. Most O rings should seal at not much past hand tight.

How tight is very tight, That's easy , just

tighten it until it wrings off and back up a half turn. Or better still just tighten it until it stops leaking. Snug it up good and run it, if it leaks tighten it some more.

Hose clamps?

Just replaced the fuel filter assembly on a 2QM20 and had (still having, actually, but less so) the same problem. Much of it I actually traced to the hose clamp on the return line fitting. I didn't touch the clamp when I was replacing the filter assembly, but I imagine as the hose got twisted around when I was manuevering it in such tight quarters that it inevitably loosened up a bit. Tightened it down some and the leak issue went down considerably. I'm still getting some coming out but I'm tempted to blame the washers... they are very easy to over-compress and ruin, especially if you're in and out trying to find and fix a trickle leak, I've done it before. I imagine replacing them will probably clear up the rest of the issue. Hope that helps... give you some more things to check, anyway. :)
