After an hour or so of motoring we get a really black film from the exhaust all over the back of the transom. This is a new 320 so maybe, we're hoping, it is just engine break-in. However, we just thought we would ask if anyone else has had this unsightly mess to deal with and if you have what did you do?

Try Spray-Nine Cleaner

I also get a little amount of black exhaust deposits from my engine and generator. I found that the cleaner Spray-Nine used with a Dobie scrubber pad on a handle works pretty well in cleaning up the mess. I seem to have a little more this spring than I did last year, so maybe it is because I'm burning old fuel from last year? I have fresh fuel now so I will see if there is a difference. It sounds like you have a lot more soot than I do. I can't say if it is due to a brand new engine, but I would be suspicious too. What does your dealer say? How about other owners of new 320's at your marina?

Had The Same Problem

I had the same problem with my H290 when it was new. Although the problem hasn't gone away completely, it isn't as bad. Gary H290 "Corinne"

spray nine for cleaning...

Careful with 'regular' spray nine... it will clean, but on older gel-coat (like my '79 h30), it will yellow the gel for quite some time. They make a 'marine' version ($6 Post Marine)works great, and a 'Patio furniture'cleaner that is not as good & more $$$

my 33 also

My 81 H33 does the same thing. My engine is a Westerbeke 24hp. The amount of soot is moderate after several weeks of crusing. I just clean it using a polish that I use on my car, it cleans up beautifully and the next time or two I have this problem I can just wash it off with my hand.

my 31 too

I get the black film too. Made great effort to clean it well this spring, and already it is back to the way it was at the end of last season. Live with it, I think.

No black stuff here

We just took delivery of our 320 last week and put a few hours on the engine. Transom is as clean as whistle. Probably just a combination of break-in and fuel.

Wally: Just curious how hard are you running your engine at this time. I assume that you are running at lower RPM's during break-in! Wondering if this is why you are not getting the black transom syndrome? Also what type of diesel are you running No 1 or No 2?

Retract my previous post...

i took a dive in the lake yesterday and yep there it was...a fine film of black soot on the lower transom. So i'm with you guys. Didn't have that problem on the benetau (same motor) probably because the exhaust exits through the starboard hull aft. But what i got was a black streak that ran down to the water line. Oh well...the transom will be easier to clean.
