diesel engine will not run long

Ok, Setup: Catalina 30 with a Universal M-18 diesel. Drained and replaced oil, replaced oil filter, replaced fuel filter, bled fuel system, drained and replaced transmission oil. I then noticed that one of the cooling hoses had a leak and so replaced it. Filled hoses and tanks with coolant. Started engine. Problem: Everything ran fine for about 20 minutes. Then the engine started acting like the throttle was being reduced until it stopped running. Would start, but would immediately die again with the same symptoms. Bled the fuel system at the injectors and it would run fine for a few (2) minutes and then it would happen again. If I bleed the system it will run for a bit, but if I don’t it will not run for more then 15 sec. I have visually verified that there is half a tank of fuel. Question: What’s wrong? Is there air in the fuel line that isn’t bleeding out? Is the fuel pump on the blitz? Anyone out there encountered something like this before? HELP Tom

air in system

it sounds like you have air getting in the fuel system some where, go back and check the fuel filter and fuel line fitings. Double check all your bleader valves to be sure they are closed tight. Let us know what the problen turns out to be! Good Luck!

ENGINE

Sounds good to me,however, you may have a glogged screen on fuel line, had the same problem and removed hose and fittings on top of tank and found them to have jellie like substance for not adding additive.Your engine is running on the fuel you are putting in. But I thimk the guy before me is more accurate.DOM THE DEISEL DUMMIE

air

I will bet on a air leak before the pump, and after the tank. If the leak was after the pump you whould have a fuel leak, but the engine would still run (unless the leak is severe). Since bleading at the injectors allows it to run, I would put money on air in system. Fred

Seems like air

Update: Tightened the fuel filter a little bit more and bled the system some more Sunday and the motor ran fine for quite a while. It did quit once, but I re-bled and it started right back up. Obviously I didn't bleed it well enough and there might be an air leak allowing more air in. I replaced the filter in the fuel/water separator and the fuel filter, filled both up and reinstalled, might have an air leak at one of those points. May also just be that I didn't bleed the injector body well enough. Thanks all!

Filter Gasket

Had the exact problem found the gasket on the fuel filter was letting in air. Good Luck

pickup tube inside the fuel tank

I had a the same problem... although it didn't happen when the tank was full.. I finally pulled the pickup tube out of the tank and found that where it was screwed into the fitting the treads had split about half way around allowing it to suck a little air when the tank wasn't full... I brazzed a new tube on the fitting..

I had a similar problem

I have a Yanmar GM2 that was doing the same thing. I even learned how to restart the engine, but it would die after a few minutes of running and the symptoms were the same as yours, it would slow down then stop. The mechanical fuel pump was the problem. It was replaced with an new electron fuel pump and the Yanmar has run great every since. That was at least 6 years ago. Good luck.
