Diesel Classes

Check with The Anchorage in Lyons, CO. They had a great class involving the Yanmar Distributor out of California.

Try Mack Boring

They sked Yanmar classes all over the country. They're good, too.

Larry Bishop at Mack Boring is the best

We took his 3 day class in 2000 right after we bought our boat. It gave us so much confidence in the Yanmar and our ability to deal with it. We took the class in New Jersey but they also give them in Buffalo Grove, IL. He sets every student up with an engine exactly like the one in their boat. You take it apart, change something and reassemble. Then you hook it up to a battery and start it. Wow! It is so amazing when it starts. At least to me. You learn to bleed your fuel lines, adjust your valves, bleed your fuel lines, clean your heat exchanger, bleed your fuel lines, change your impeller, bleed your fuel lines, chnage oil, bleed your fuel lines, change filters, bleed your fuel lines, replace belts, bleed your fuel lines, inspect your engine mounts and most important, bleed your fuel lines. Worth every dollar we spent on tuition, air fare, rental car, hotel and meals. I would recommend the class to anyone who wants to work on their own engine. You will save way more than the cost of the class. But the biggest benefit will be enjoying your boat more.

LOL!

Rip, that was great. Even for a guy who rebuilt his first car engine (his '54 Hudson) by making a hoist using an old apple tree. Can't remember if it started right up. That was in '65 or so. By '73 I won a bet with my local Chevy dealer parts man that I would have the short block he just gave me at noon, running in my ski boat by midnight. (400hp Chevy) I hit the key at 20 minutes to midnight and it fired instantly. (witnessed) That was fun. Easy too. Consider another option to taking an expensive class. All engines work the same way. Learn one, and you learn them all. Even a rotary engine is much the same as a piston engine. Buy a book. Ask around for a knowledgeable gear head. A few pointers and the proper maintenance parts are all you really need.

Just get a part time job in a diesel engine shop.

That way you get paid for learning to do the job and you wind up with a box of tools.

Hey, Fred Ficarro, A question ...

Fred, this is off topic but if you do not mind I have a question. I looked at your website showing your job you did on your Hunter. I noticed your portlights below the cabin top handrails appear to be non factory. Did you install them yourself? Are they acrylic? Any tips on their installation? Lastly are they fit for offshore? Do they leak? Do you feel they are as good as factory windows?????? Thanks for any info you might offer. Regards, Big Joe.
