I have noticed that although my engine is starting and running very well, it is not running smoothly in the upper RPM range. I checked the air cleaner and it was fine, the fuel filter has not been changed for some time so it may the problem. Our marina does not have a diesel mechanic so I would rather learn how to change it myself than to let them experiment. The filter is a Raccor MDL 110, can anyone furnish a set of instructions to properly change the filter. Thanks for you help.

There are 2 filters
I don't know if you are aware that there usually are 2 fuel filter on most diesel engines. The 1st one is a water separator filter that separate water from diesel. It is usually mounted within the engine compartment. Your Racor filter is probably R11T and is a water separator filter. You don't have to replace the filter every time. You usually just have to drain the water out. When the filter gets saturated, then you replace the filter. It will also filter out some of the big stuff and gunk, but the main purpose is water. The 2nd filter in mounted on the side of the engine, and that is the one that filters crud from the fuel. This filter is usually made by the engine manufacturer, but there often are aftermarket ones that will fit. If you follow the fuel line from the 1st filter, you will run into the 2nd filter. It is usually a small canister with a pump lever on the side. You may be able to take your current filter to West Marine and match it up. Who is the maker of your engine? Get a engine service manual and it will give you all the details.

It would help a lot if we knew the make and model,so many different engines but usually are two filters one up on the engine either front or side the 110 is the one coming from the tank. When was the last time you checked the mixing elbo,does black smoke come out exhaust when you add more power,could be the mixing elbo,do you get full rpm's in neutral but not under power. You should change both filters and clean out the mixing elbo. nick

Careful on the Racor's plastic screw
On the Racor water separator R11T filter, there is a plastic screw towards the top of the unit. You 1st undo the metal screw on the bottom of the unit until some liquid start to drain out. Put an old tincan under it first. You then unscrew the plastic screw towards the top. This is a breather screw so you can relief the vacuum inside and let more liquid drain out of the bottom. Be careful with this plastic screw because it is a bit fragile. When you are done, do not over tighten or the plastic head may break off, and you won't be able to find or buy a replacement screw. You may end up buying a whole unit.
