Did you do your Electromaax upgrade yet?

Maine,

Was wondering if you did the serpentine upgrade yet? No one has come out with a set up for Universals, as far as I know they’re still working on it. There is a lot available for Yanmar, Westerbeke and even Perkins engines. No standardization and every install is slightly different which makes it hard for them to market one. I began machining my own pulleys after an extensive search for prefabricated ones came up empty. I have the alternator (Ø2.25) & water pump (Ø3.00) done. Everything looks good so far. They fit and there isn't any interference. I got all the info needed from Gates Engineering and the Machinist Handbook. I decided to use a 6 groove K belt because the 10 groove J belt is a bit wider and I wasn’t sure either would fit. I now think a 10J would work. I've had a hard time tracking down the water pump max RPM. Torreson Marine told me 3000 rpm which makes no sense seeing the top end of the M25XP is 3300 and the pulley ratio is 5" to 3". Because I can't put a RPM on the pump I've decided to make the pulley diameters the same size as the original ones. I will be removing the crankcase pulley to make one to match. I will machine them from aluminum and have them anodized. I'm not sure if I'll do a type II or Type III (hardcoat). I think the hard coat will wear and stand up to a marine environment much better. I will post sketched drawings when I'm done if anyone is interested. Did/does your upgrade require removing the crankcase pulley or does the new one slip over it? I ask because if it slips over like their Yanmar video then the water pump pulley has to be bigger to maintain the same ratio. That crankcase pulleys look machined verses the Universal's are cast and don't lend themselves to a slip over style. The face doesn’t look too flat. Correct me if I’m wrong but the use of TefGel is for ease of removal later. I’m feeling a little better than when I started that this will work out.

I have not yet had a chance to do mine because I have a custom SeaFrost engine driven refrigeration set up that requires a custom machined crank pulley. I just have not had the time to pull my crank pulley because which involves removing my water lift muffler to get the puller in there..

I understand John has come up with an M-25 kit though.. I am working with them currently on a Volvo D2030 kit that is a very tough engine to do. The D2030 pulleys are up in Canada being machined right now and the 140A alt is on the boat. Will take some pics when I get the rest of the kit.

I talked to John last Fall and he said they where working on one but not yet available. I’ve already machined the water pump & alternator pulleys. I can see why it's so difficult as every boat set up is different. I had to cut a little fiberglass which sits behind the teak trim on the engine hatch door just to get the water pump pulley off. I dread ever having to change out the pump.

I pulled the crankshaft pulley yesterday with no problem. The hardest part was finding a 29mm deep socket that would fit. After 2 tries I ended up using a 1-1/8 socket that fit but tight. Not sure why the M25 has such a long crankshaft with the spline on the end. The nut is recessed in the pulley and the socket must have a 1-5/8” or smaller OD. I decided against machining a new one after pulling it. It is cast iron and is harmonically balanced. I machined the Ø5.125 down to Ø4.500 and made an aluminum serpentine to fit over it. There are (3) M8 x 1 tapped holes equally spaced on a 56mm bolt circle to mount to. Do you think I could use socket head machined screws to attach it?

Using a K6 serpentine set up moves the centerline out .200 which isn't bad. I remember reading someone saying they doubted a serpentine set up would fit. So far so good.

Now that you splashed I would assume you got the serpentine upgrade completed? I just had mine black anodized and hope to install it this weekend. i still have my cover on  but can't wait to run the engine.

That looks great. I never did my Electromaax upgrade. It was low on the list, don't really need it, and it required sending them my crank pulley so they could machine one with a pulley for my Seafrost refrigeration as well. Ultimately I just never got around to it. Heck I never got my cabin heater installed either... Someday I will get to it. I have been working with them to fit a Volvo D2030 which is a VERY tough engine. It has been multiple fits thus far and I should have the oulleys back tomorrow or Monday.... They've been great so far...

Update

I finally finished :D
It looks good and lines up properly, I used a Gates laser Alignment tool to check my math. I can't wait to take the cover off and try running it. Looking back I'm not sure I had the original 3/8 sheaves lined up perfectly and there was a bit of rust on the crankcase pulley which contributed to my dust problem. I was tired of Sunday morning when it seemed I was always stopping to tighten a squealing alternator.
It's a 6 groove K belt 40.5" which can be had at any auto supply house. I bought 2 from AutoZone for 13.85 each.

Now I'm moving on to my bilge pump that needs a new float switch.

Please tell me you kept those dimensions so you can make another kit, or a hundred, and begin selling them....? Seriously! You can probably now see why Electromaax charges $600.00 for the kit....;)

I believe no two boats are the same so there is a bit of tweaking. It wasn't all that difficult. I would think any machine shop could do it. I did document my dimensions incase I need to make a replacement. I keep all this stuff in a binder that will go with her someday when I sell her. :)

Last season I used a Tool recommended by Stu to tighten my V belt. The tool works great but I forgot to remove it and started the engine. ouch!
