We did

The weather was beautiful and the wind was light at the start. We had about 8 boats at the line at the same time and we were in the middle of them. This was my worst start of the year even though we were at the line when the start gun went off. I had 4 previous starts this year when I was the first boat to the start(My best being last week). We all crossed the start line going about 2 knots on a beam reach. There were 3 boats together at the first mark 2 of which were in front of us. They had a close call and overcorrected so we squirted between them. The wind was up and down all night and an Ericson 34 was able to get the edge of some wind at the start which allowed him to get about 10 boat lengths on me. After a few legs we had passed all the other boats in our class and had only the E34 to deal with(we have the same rating). When crossing the harbor he headed over to a point where opposing wind and current will cause a dead spot so we took a different line and passed them. Then we were in the lead for the remainder of the race. We beat the E34 by roughly 2 minutes but lost to 2 other boats on corrected time. One of which was my previous boat(Pearson 28). So now we are tied with the P28 for the lead in our class after 4 races. BTW, the E34 is owned by a friend(he is also Bruce King's attorney) who bought the boat new in 1987. I have never been able to beat him(in this boat) until the last race of last season when I out tacked him and beat him by a half boat length at the finish. It was a memorable night. Maine sail took some photos I hope he will post. See the link to our racing website.

PHRF

Try your local PHRF; for instance we'd use PHRF of the Chesapeake. You can presumabley get more detailed info if you are actually interested in getting a PHRF rating for your boat for a specific region and intend to race.

Official report

I managed to obtain the official report from the race committee. Tim was leading the race right up to the last leg, but Maine wouldn't let him tack towards the finish line because he was still putting the second coat of wax on the topsides that were out of the water. The bonus Tim did get tho, was all his winches are freshly greased since Maine had to tear them down and regrease them after every tack. After the race Maine was last seen somewhere down in the bildge with his dremmel polishing keel bolts. ;) ;)

More racing last night

It was an awesome night for a sail. The start was nothing to write home about but we did cross at the favored end of the line at the pin about 3 seconds behind a Tanzer 22 who is a great competitor. We had to tack away to get clean air but we needed at least one tack to make the 1st mark anyway. His boat flies in the light wind. We had trouble shaking 2 of the smaller boats inclusing my old Pearson(they try to draft me and ride my wake) but once we did they got small very fast. We were able to run the 7 mark course in less tacks than our competition which increased our lead even more. We also used the 1.5 knot incoming current to our advantage to sail low on the marks and let the current push us up to them a few times. Local knowledge is a wonderfull thing! One obstacle we had was a cattle boat full of tourists kept us from tacking around a mark pushing us in an area of questionable wind conditions but the wind stayed steady and it was a blessing in disguise enabling us to make the next mark in one tack while everyone else made at least 3. Another nice surprise was a powerboater who was getting ready to turn into our path once we tacked who graciously rounded our stern upon request. Must have been a former sailor. We took the gun and was about 10 minutes ahead of the next guy. No Ericson 34 as they were playing on their new Cambria 44 in RI this week. No Maine Sail last night be we still had a great crew and the sunset was superb. Pizza, Boubon and beer afterwards. Waiting to hear for the results. I think we placed at leat 3rd if not higher.

The fastest way to make an old boat look great is

to sign the title to somebody else. As if by magic, all the blood, sweat and tears are forgotten. What remains in memory are her sweet lines and all the good times. She will look twice as nice as you remember the first time somebody sails her past you.

Poliglow

Not to start a debate but that boat has had religious applications of Poliglow for the last 5 years. I taught him how to properly reapply every year and he loves the stuff. As for her looks, I believe she looked better when I owned her ;-). I have fond memories of doing work and upgrading her systems and when it came time to sell after our successful survey of the Ericson, we had buyers remorse and sellers remorse at the same time. She sold to the first looker for the asking price that was 25% higher than what I paid. My wife was very happy to know that she would only be a few moorings away and loved as much as we did.

Thanks for the racing updates- I really enjoy hearing about your exploits

I figure I am going to hold off the racing itch for no more than next summer. I am not sure when or how but it is starting to call my name. As far as seller's remorse, I was not talking so much about your old boat but about boats in general- funny how you can miss them.
