Why would our hero, Kevin Kostner, go to a plunging foredeck in a gale, with waves breaking all over it and him, to hand the jib without a PFD or a tether? The character was supposed to be an experienced sailor, he even singlehanded a 40 foot gaff schooner!

for the same reason

Why would he plunge headlong into the sea to save a stranger? If I recall correctly it was based on a book my Nicholas Sparks. Most of his books end in a melodramatic tragedy.

Haven't seen it.

But if it's about sailing i'll go. I'll go see anything that has sailboats or sailing in it. People do stupid things in movies. Look at Open water II for instance. This is the first I've heard of it. I'll do some internet searching on it. Maybe it's out on DVD.

Because the writer wasn't a sailor???????????

It makes a better ending than if he stayed in the cockpit, or used a jack line or put on a PDF. It's this kind of writing and ultimately movie making that drives the uneducated to think all boaters must surely be required to wear PDFs at all times because tehy (meaning we) are too stupid to realize when we're in danger. Drives me nuts but that's Hollywood.

That's Hollywood...

...not reality. It made for a better ending for Costner to be a martyr. Alternate ending: Costner puts on life jacket and harness, clips to jack line, deploys sea anchor and MOB gear, calls the Coasties, recues family, evryone lives happily ever after. BOR- RING... My wife says that "Message in a Bottle" is a love story with a sailing scene. I said it would be better as a sailing movie with a love scene.

For the same reason Russel Crowe stands

on the bow sprit in Master and Commander.

NOT a sailing movie. A better choice would be "No Way Out"

My suggestion is a movie called "Wind"

Wind is about the America's Cup racing

Terrible Movie

Gary, you will get a kick out of the scenery in the movie. The book was written by Nicholas Sparks as mentioned who lives in New Bern, N.C. The story was to have taken place in N.C. but the movie was filmed in Oregon! Kevin Kostner lives with his Dad in the movie and in one scene he is on the beach, which has rocks on it, and you can see mountains in the background.*yks After seeing that I lost all interest in the movie. Why in the world you would go to Oregon to film a movie about N.C. is beyond me. Tom (Tarheel living in Texas) S/V At Last

Taxes and such, Tex

A lot of states give huge breaks (including OR) to film there... NC must not have been as hospitable to filming, huh? :) I love it when they film Great Lakes movies and you can see dolphins (can't recall which one that was, but it did crack me up... I've yet to see a dolphin in Lake Michigan! ;) ) Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer II P303

If you think the movie was bad...

...Then you should read the book. It is the most trenchant, boring, poorly written book I've ever read. Hilariously bad.
