I'm wanna take my hunter 25.5 up the detroit river (Lake Erie to Lake St. Clair) and I just wanted to know if anyone here had made that trip before in a 25.5. any ideas how fast the current is? I'm hoping my Merc. 7.5hp will survive the 32 mile up river. Should I just have her trailered to her new home? I really wanna make the trip coz it would be a great sailing experience... thanks

Not a problem

We have done this trip the last 3 years for the MAC Race. You will not want to go up the middle of the river but hug the sides and you will be fine. Less current along the side's. It is a fun trip. Cliff

Which side?

Thanks for your input Cliff. Which side is better to sail, the US or Canadian side? Or am I gonna be switching sides based on freighters traffic or currents speed? or Should I just follow the sailboat traffic when in doubt? I will also be asking the local sailors for some pointers. I'm sure many of them had done this before. I sail out of Humbug. Do you know anyone there I can talk to?

Don't know anybody in Humburg and it does not matter which side you motor on. Just pay attention to the traffic and have a good time. From where we sail on Lake Eire around the Islands it is a 2 day trip for us. You will want to leave early in the morning when you do it, just to get a jump on the traffic. Take your time use common sence and enjoy the trip. Cliff
